upgraded it to Esxi 5.1 U2 Hypervisor - stuck on 24% with the following error :(Errno 39) Directory not empty

Hi all,

I will like if someone can help me with my issue.

I have IBM server : IBM System X 3550 M2 [794622G] model.

I upgraded my Esxi 4.1 to Esxi 5.1.0 - build 1483097 ( its a customize ISO Image from IBM).

The issue is that its a stand a lone host, and now I've Evaluation mode ' that will expire after 60 days.

I thought to upgraded it to Esxi 5.1 U2 build 1483097 Hypervisor form Vmware site, so I could use the free license.

But when I started the upgrading  - it's stuck on 24% with the following error :(Errno 39) Directory not empty: 'vmfs/volumes/f2dc807a-77e1-72716789cd30/state.6960526'

Can anyone Help or guide me how to solve it, without using update manager?

Very Difficult Networking Question

Hey Experts,

I have a very difficult networking question.

I purchased a dedicated server from a hosting company and they asked me what OS.  I chose ESXi because of the cost of them providing me with Windows when I already have my very own legitimate copy for use as a guest O/S/.

Windows 7 is installed and runs fine via the vSphere client but it cannot get an IP address.  From what I have been able to glean I have been provided with exactly one IP address.  The network page of the host shows that the IP I was given has been assigned statically (I confirmed it was not set to automatic) to the the host.

As such windows is unable to achieve the task of getting an IP and connecting to the Internet.

I just wanted to ask the experts out there if there was a way to somehow move that IP to the windows BOX and then configure the host to use say 192.168.5.10 and then create a second NIC in windows for the 192.168.5.20 and then be able to use vSphere from within windows and let windows have the public IP.  Of course I would need to do all of this with no physical access to the machine in question. Of course running like this where the only way to access the stable hypervisor is from an unstable copy of windows is probably not the best approach.

What would be ideal is if there was a way to configure ESXi host to share its IP and allow the guest access to the internet via that IP.  However, I am using ESXi version 5.0 (the only version offered to me by the hosting company) and I have already installed the free license from VMwares website so if there were any trial features available they went bye bye when I installed the free license.

I am assuming I need to purchase additional IPs and the hosting company has graciously said they would provide me with a free IP for up to 24 hours to see if that solved my issue of no internet from the guest o/s.  I get to play with that free IP tomorrow sometime.

Any guidance on this topic would be appreciated.

Cheers

Risah.

Auto Deploy, Host Profile and Answer Files

Hi

I am busy trying to learn a little more about Auto deploy. I am trying to understand what is the best practice when it comes to the Host Profiles portion of the Auto Deploy process. The way I see it there are two ways to make use of the host profiles.

1) For each host I create a separate host profile and create the needed deployment rules, one rule per host.

2) I create one host profile and one deployment rule and then use the answer file option to create the unique per host settings.

I have implemented both option, however option 2 seems to be less reliable where as option 1 works each and every time. So my main question is what is the recommended way to use the host profiles with Auto Deploy.

Thanks

Scrambled screen when booting ESXi 5.5u2 installer via UEFI... comes up fine with BIOS boot..

I'm trying to set up a home server using a SuperMicro X10SL7-F + e3-1241v3.

I burned a DVD and am able to get the installer running booting through BIOS (was able to install onto an on-board USB stick and stood up a test linux VM... no sweat).

I decided to re-install using a UEFI boot instead and it seems my monitor is displaying it in the incorrect resolution (monitor claims the installer is using 800x600 yet when I use the BIOS boot, it says 1024x768). (I see ESXi yellow and it seems to responsive to my input).

FWIW I also tried creating a uefi compatible usb stick and that just gives me an error (Command line is empty, Syntax Error)

Any suggestions for moving forward? Am I wrong in assuming UEFI is preferred in this day and age?

Setup a vsphere cluster with 2 hosts with internal storage shared via HP LeftHand - Doubts

Hi, I'm in the process of creating a two nodes esxi cluster. These nodes will share their internal storage with HP Lefthand Appliance (HP StoreVirtual VSA). I need the first steps to create the cluster, or better, the macro blocks, ie:

- install esxi on each node
- setup Virtual Center and create the vmware cluster

- Deploy the VSA virtual machine....

I have many doubts due to the reason that I cannot have (HP setup guide says this) VMs on the VSA datastore other than the VSA VM itself. How can I setup things? Creating intially two datastores, deploy VCenter on one datastore, create cluster, deploy VSA VM on the other datastore....

Can you help me please?

Storage DRS Anti-Affinity Confusion

I have two DFS servers I want to keep separate.

They contain multiple large VMDKs preventing them from fitting on a single datastore so I disabled the "Keep VMDKs together" setting on each on the datastore cluster.

I set a DRS rule on the cluster to keep the VMs running on separate hosts, and I'd like to prevent the storage from doing the same.

However, since I disabled the "Keep VMDKs together" setting storage DRS yells at me about conflicting rules. 2015-03-12_09-56-04.jpg

Is what I want to do possible? If so, how would I configure this?

Steps to remove old SAN from 5.5 environment.

I am running ESXi 5.5 with 2 hosts and I recently moved all my VM's from the datastores on my old SAN to new datastores on the new one. What are the steps to remove the old SAN from my iscsi environment? Is it ok to delete the old datastores even though they still contain things like .vSphere.HA and/or vsantraces folders? One even contains the following folders: vmkdump, .vSphere-HA, syslog, vsantraces and vSphere Management Assistant.

I just want to make sure I don't cause problems while removing this SAN.

Thanks,

Scott

vSphere Crashing on Mac mini

First let me say - I know vSphere isn't officially supported by VMware - that being said, there are plenty of folks running it on a Mac mini with no issues - as I have on several different models for years.

I'm getting the PSOD on a new install with a Mac mini running vSphere version 5.5. It runs fine for a day or two and then crashes. Can someone point in the the right direction by looking at the code shown on the screen after the crash?

Thanks - Scott

Upgrade Process from 5.5u2 to 6.0

Thought I would take a moment and share my first upgrade to vSphere 6.  The process went extremely smooth.  The environment I upgraded was my test platform which consists of a Windows 2012 R2 Server running vCenter 5.5u2b and a single ESXi 5.5u2 host. After downloading and mounting the ISO, I started the installation of vCenter.  I liked the streamline installer, not having to install every component separately like previous versions.  The upgrade asked very few questions and worked flawlessly.  The database was changed from SQL Express to Postgres.  After the installation which took about 45 minutes I was able to connect using the Web Client and see all my VM's which were running as expected.  I then installed the vSphere C# Client and connected just fine.  Now I wanted to update the Update Manager and again the process was easy and flawless.  After upgrading vCenter I moved on to the Host.  I burned the ISO to a DVD and booted the server to the DVD.  The upgrade process was easy and again flawless.  After the upgrade to ESXi 6 all VM's booted up as expected.  I set my guest to upgrade their tools during a reboot, and when I checked all the VM's Tools Version was current.

Now to start playing with all the new features and plan out upgrades for clients...

Great job VMware Team!

SQL 2014 support for vSphere 6.0 and VUM 6.0?

$

Hello

I, like many, was pleased to see vSphere 6.0 go GA yesterday.

I have been reviewing the Interoperability Matrixes and am a little concerned.

We were hoping to use SQL 2014 Standard 64-BIT as the DB of choice. I need to host the following database: vRA 6.2.1 SRM 6.0 vCenter 6.0 and VUM 6.0

the first 2 show as supported for SQL 2014. vCenter 6.0 shows as no supported databases currently?! and VUM doesnt show support for SQL 2014 (but 5.5 U2 does)

Any ideas?

Help on vSphere 6 upgrade strategy with an internal SSO -> external PSC

$

I would like to ask for some idea and help on what and how to reorganize our vsphere infrastructure.

We have an environment that grow really fast in the last 2 years... from a single vcenter center/infrastructure for our server environment we growth to 2 main Datacenter + 1 small site with a 2nd arriving in some months and probably a good number of branch offices.

Our 2 main datacenter are configured each with 3 vCenter 5.5:

1) Our Main Server vCenter

2) Our Horizon vCenter for VDI

3) A vCenter dedicated to a separate set of servers for a specific project

All the vCenter are now 5.5u2 but in the past our VDI vSphere was still 5.0 while the rest was upgaded to 5.1 and then 5.5.

The 3) is a dedicated environment with some software/configuration that could conflict or be managed in a different way from our actual infrastructure (it could remain to an older version for more time for example).

All those vCenter are configured with a Multisite SSO separated by environment so we have a Multisite SSO for Server, 1 for VDI and 1 for the 3).

Our vCenter have the SSO and all services embedded into the windows server and a separate SQL Server Database for each of them.

Checking some documents on the vSphere 6 I saw that it seems that we've a configuration that should in some way changed and thinking about the future and implementation of new products I would like to understand how we could manage those infrastructure and how we can join it.

In this document http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2108548 it seems that managing sites that have embedded PSC and vCenter Server on the same host is not a recommended configuration so, thinking at least at our main Server vCenter infrastructure (2 different in 2 sites) we should separate the PSC making them external.

Should we move the SSO server outside of our 5.5 infrastructure now before upgrading to 6 so that we could upgrade SSO to external PSC and simply upgrade our vCenter Server or there's any way during upgrade to put the PSC on an external server (like running the setup on a new server and migrating the SSO to external PSC)?

Thinking about the future, we would probably like to unify the PSC and use the same PSC servers (2 ha with a LB probably in each site). It's possible when upgrading a vcenter Server to migrate it from the SSO server/PSC it's using to a different one?

Topology change in vSphere 6.0

$

Our current vSphere 5.5 topology looks like shown below.  Three sites, each with one SSO service installed on the same VM as the primary vCenter 5.5 server.  At Site A, we have a Horizon View 6.0 deployment with all desktop vm's residing on it's own vCenter 5.5 server.  The Horizon View vCenter server is registered with the SSO installed on the primary server (arrow in the pic).  None of the vCenter servers are currently configured for linked mode, but that is something I'd like to have in the future.

vsphere 5.5 current topology.png

My question is, since our topology doesn't seem to fit with any of the recommended topologies described in KB article 2108548, would it be a good idea to just install new vCenter/PSC 6.0 servers rather than first changing the vSphere 5.5 topology before upgrading?  If I want to replicate inventory and have "linked" mode-type visibility in 6.0 between all three sites, it looks like I need to break out the PSC (SSO) onto a different server than the vCenter server anyway or I won't be able to achieve that down the road without re-installing anyway.

Thank you for any insights you can provide.

vCenter 4.1 new install - Server service account wrong?!

$

Hi,

Installing vCenter 4.1 on a brand new just patched 2008 R2 Enterprise guest. The guest is joined to the domain. As per the manual and best practice I have created a dedicated vCenter user account in Active Directory. This account has been added to the local administrator group of the vcenter server and I have given it the following rights on the vCenter server:

Act as part of the operating system

Log on as a service

I have then logged in with this account and gone to install vCenter server. I select the option to install a local SQL 2005 Express instance. It then prompts me to use the SYSTEM Account or specifiy my own. As I have a dedicated account and it is best practice I opt to do this. The account name is prepopulated and greyed out with just the name of the account, with no domain information. If I then go to enter the password I get the error:

Failed to verify the service account. Error code: [87] : Error message: [The parameter is incorrect.]

I believe this is happening because the account name has no domain info in it, but I am unable to change it (So currently it says <account name> instead of <domain>\<account name>. I have found no kb article from VMware, and also I cannot believe I am the first to see this error?

Questions about the upgrade path and the Interoperability Matrixes

Hello.

We're going to plan upgrading our vSphere cluster to 6.0. We're coming from Version 5.1.0 Build 2306353. When I'm right, this should be 5.1 U3.

I took a look in the VMware Product Interoperability Matrixes an found that there is no information about an upgrade from VMware ESX/ESXi 5.1 U3 -> 6.0. Does this mean, the upgrade from 5.1 U3 to 6.0 isn't possible or does it mean, that it isn't tested, yet?

The VMware vCenter Server 5.1 U3 is pointed out to be compatible with the new verstion 6.0.

Could anyone tell us wether it is possible to upgrade ESXi 5.1 U3 to 6.0 or not?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I have installed ESXI 5.1 on Workstation 9 on a user account but the both as run as administator.

When I tired to run Server 2008 R2.iso or Exchange.iso, I got the following error message:

Network boot from Intel E1000

Client MAC ADDR: 00 0C....

PXE-E53:No boot filename received

PXE-MOF:Exiting Intel PXE ROM

Operating system not found

I have reinstalled Esxi and Workstation 9 and they run as an administrator but the issue is the same.

There is a print screen with the settings for the Virtual machine created under ESXI.

thank you for your help

vSphere 6.0 web client shows Single Sign-On

Hello

this might seem like a minor thing and maybe i am doing something wrong

in vSphere 5.5 the splash screen of the web client shows "VMware vSphere Web Client"

however in vSphere 6.0 the splash screen shows "VMware vCenter Single Sign-On" even after configuring single sign on

is this by design as it seems confusing to me!?
