How do I renew my trial version of esxi 5.5

Upgrading ESXi 5.1 drivers when using Cisco UCS Blade Servers

Hi, Im pretty new to Cisco blades with regards to maintaining and upgrading ESXi when using them but have a question about maintaining the Cisco driver versions.

The way I see it is that I build the blades with the Cisco Customized ISO of ESXi , say for example 5.1 U2 which contains the specific drivers for Cisco UCS servers. Subsequent patches come out from VMware and are applied but these contain generic driver updates say for megaraid_sas controllers etc.

If I want to keep ESXi updated with the most current Cisco drivers I have to download them from Cisco and install them separately to the VMware issued updates right? I find that its difficult to ensure I haven’t missed any driver updates from Cisco doing it this way. One way I assume is to wait for the next major Cisco Custom ISO to be released and perform an upgrade of ESXi on all the hosts, this way all the latest Cisco drivers are applied and nothing is missed.

Does anyone else follow an upgrade process like this or do you have a simpler way to perform driver updates in-between major update releases and corresponding custom ISOs?

Thanks for any advice

Project to run on client

Hello friends,

Although I became VCP5 last year, I confess that it is the first time that I will play a VMware project with HA and DRS start before had only done by simulation in my labs, including videos on VMware that are on my blog www.ivanildogalvao.com.br were all performed in labs in house.

Well, I designed and presented a project for the client and he approved, is already buying the hardware and software, will be:

02 Dell R720 servers with 08 gigabit network cards, 02 processors and 32GB of RAM, hard drives 300GB SAS;

01 Storage Dell MD 3200i iSCSI, with 2.6TB drives (here will be stored and the VMS File Server data in separate LUNS, of course);

The File Server will be virtual, but their data were in a storage LUN, the File Server then accesses this LUN via iSCSI Initiator.

01 Storage Dell MD 3000i iSCSI which will be used solely for backup files and VMS also on separate LUNs;

02 Switches Dell N2000 unique to the SAN;

01 Virtual Machine Windows Server 2008 R2, with Veeam Backup & Replication, only to back up the VMS;

01 VMware vSphere 5.5 Essentials 01 Kit Plus.

My idea is: Use 04 network interfaces with jumbo linked server frame for the first 04 MD3200i iSCSI storage cards and use the other 04 server B network interfaces connected in other 04 iSCSI network cards of the same storage, there riding the SAN.

The idea comes from a tip from a colleague here in the community, the Richardson Porto.

Remaining 04 network adapters on each server, then use 02 to create a vSwitch LAN for VMS interact with LAN, with NIC Teaming enabled, 01 for Vmotion and 01 for the management of network hosts, the vSwitch LAN and the network management will be in the same physical network segment using the same range of IP address.

Then ask. Is good this way, or want to suggest something better?

The room is small, with a maximum of 8 VMS, flight use the vCenter Virtual Appliance for the management of hosts, vms and other features of vSphere, or find it safer to use the vCenter in a VM with Windows Server 2008?

Still I will detail the action plan in a spreadsheet, while'll follow the implementation, so before either validate this layout here with colleagues.

Thanks !

How to update an ESXi host from the command line

Sorry for bumping an old thread. I'm new to ESXi. I'm running ESXi 5.5 build 1331820 and I'm at a loss how to apply the patches.

Preferrably I want to apply all relevant patches through console (SSH). Can anyone give me pointers how to do this? Thanks

Moderator Note (a.p.): Branched to a new discussion from HeartBleed patch for build 1331820?

Firewall ports required to access Standalone ESXi hosts (5.5) from a remote vSphere client (5.5)

Hello,

I have a handful of standalone ESXi hosts (5.5) at a remote site that are behind firewalls. I need to access them from a vSphere client that is centrally located. What ports need to be opened to make a successful connection?

Documentation is little confusing;

80 - TCP - vSphere client  (Source)- ESXi (Target) - Redirect Web Browser to HTTPS Service

443 - TCP - vSphere Client (Source) - ESXi (Target) - vSphere Client to ESXi/ESX Host management connection

902 - TCP - vSphere Client (Source) - ESXi (Target) - vSphere Client access to virtual machine consoles (MKS)

What about port 903/TCP , is that required as well? Other than listed above is there any other ports required for a successful connection? Thanks in advance

2 ESXi Host Design Implementation

Hello All,

We're in the process of setting up a plan to virtualize our current environment.

Currently we have the following hardware in place:

2 ESXi host with 2 x 4port 1Gb NIC cards(8 ports total) and 2 x dual port 10GbE (4 ports total)

Equallogic SAN with dual controllers each with 2 ports

2 Dell N4032F 24port 10GbE Switch

We were thinking about using the 10GbE for just the storage network and use the remaining 8 x 1Gb Nics for Management/vMotion/Server Network connecting to our exisiting Cisco 3750 switches.

What would be the best use for the 8 Nics for Management/vMotion and our server network.

Any help would be appreciated

Thank you

Andrew

vCenter 5.1. Update 3 has no Upgrade path?

$

The Solution Upgrade Path of the interoperability matrix is showing that there is no upgrade path available from either vCenter Server 5.1 Update 3 or from ESXi 5.1 Update 3.

I am having a hard time believing that the latest patch for the 5.1 versions cannot upgrade.  Normally a rebuild would do just fine, but there is replication and SRM integrated and I need to upgrade in place.   Has anyone upgraded from 5.1 Update 3 to 5.5 Update 2 or anything in between?  I am really hoping this is just a glitch in the interoperability matrix.

2 "local" vcenter servers - what to do with SSO?

$

So I've read the install and configure doc regarding SSO deployment modes, and what-not, but I'm still not certain what to do.

The situation:

small'ish environment. They have one production vcenter, and another vcenter for VDI. The production was upgraded to 5.5, and SSO was installed on the vcenter box itself, as a "standalone vcenter single sign on server".

Now, I want to upgrade the vdi vcenter.-- do I also install SSO on it? Or do I select the "multi-site" option, even though these two vcenters are on the same subnet running on hardware in the same building?

I'm tempted just to install the second one, as though it is the first. That would create a whole new SSO db/configuration, but ... I really don't care. It's a small environment, SSO really is not doing anything for them anyway.

What do you think - what is the best way to proceed?

OS X Yosemite, vSphere and latest VMware Tools

Has anyone  been able to get Yosemite running (yes on Mac hardware), with the VMware Tools running properly? Yosemite seems to run fine except for the resolution being fixed at 1024 x 768 and there are some other graphic glitches.

Just checking for some success on this? Seems Yosemite has been out now for some time now for VMWare to fix the issues.

Thanks - Scott

Ways to upgrade vCenter

Hey Guys,

If I want to upgrade from vCenter 5.5U2 to vCenter 5.5U2D, do we need to reinstall vCenter or is there a way to just install a patch?

Thank you,

Matthew

Cannot Remove Hosts with VMs on it

ESXi5.1u1 Source

ESXi5.5u1 Target

VCenter 5.1 U1 Source

VCenter 5.5 U1 Target

External applications hooking into VCenters are ESM Spectrum NEtbackup and vCOPS.

Guys we use a proven upgrade path where we Disconnect a PROD ESXi host from VCenter 5.1u1 , with its VMs on it , then Remove and it .

Then we add this host to VCenter 5.5u1 and accept the warming that it is being managed by another VCenter . Then use vMotion to upgrade the host while it is in VCenter 5.5 .

This works great for us . However , on our main production VCenter ( 5.1u1 ) we can General error occurred when removing the Host .

Screenshot attached of the Event .

KB articles above suggests you have to Enable Lockdown mode , and that will resolve your issue , this is not Working for us , when set using SSH .

I confirmed in VCenter 5.1 GUI that lockdown is indeed working

VCenter vpxd does not show much , only that there are SOAP queries being made against this host >

See Evict1.jpg attached . Evict1.JPG

Vmkernel log and HostD did no show me anything that looks like its related.

Any Ideas ?

I must mention that we have done all our DEV / TEST / DR datacentres successfully already using this method , using same versions of everything.

There is something unique to this VCenter and its hosts .

vSphere 5.5 or 6.0 iSCSI setup with Openfiler or FreeNAS on Workstation 10

$

All

I'm trying to setup a simple system on VMware workstation and for some reason it's not playing ball

The setup: 2 x ESX 5.5 or 6.0 hosts each with 4 NICs and I want to setup Openfiler or FreeNAS to provide shared storage via iSCSI

I want to setup two NICs for Management and VMs and two NICs dedicated for iSCSI traffic

Most of the simple setups out there put iSCSI traffic on the Management network and one NIC for FreeNAS or Openfiler, which is hardly realistic or desirable

However when I setup on VMware workstation, despite setting up (I think) correctly with the iSCSI traffic to go through two different NICs from the rest, the ESXi hosts refuse to see the LUNs presented by either NAS software. If I put just 1 NIC for the NAS on the Management network, it presents the LUN for ESXi. If I setup to NICs which don't have the Management PG on it, I get nothing.

Has anyone managed to get ESXi 5.5 or 6.0 to connect to an iSCSI LUN on NICs which are on an isolated (Host-only) network on VMware workstation 10?

We had used FrontRange's DSM software to deploy vSphere 5.0 to our clients.   When trying to uninstall the software, DSM reports a failure to remove it.  When looking at the log files, I see the following error:

Followed by:

We have rebooted the device, but the same exact error messages occur, and I am not sure how to get the software removed at this stage.

Any help would be appreciated.
