Hi all,

I would like to migrate my farm form 5.0 to 5.5. At this moment, the "old" VC is on a virtual machine and the new VC must be installed on a new, physical machine. How can accomplish these tasks?

Thank you very much.

No VCenter Server in Vsphere Web Client

I have logged in both as root and the sso administrator (administrator@vsphere.local) and neither one shows a Vcenter server or any inventory at all.

Searching for this problem, I found this article: vSphere Web Client: No vCenter | VMFocus

So I go through those steps, but unfortunately, when I select add and am suppose to choose my domain from the drop down menu, my domain does not appear. It just says "(server)" and won't let me do anything besides choose that.

So I start searching for how to resolve this problem and find this article: Joining vSphere Hosts to Active Directory | VMware vSphere Blog - VMware Blogs

I followed the steps and added my domain in the vsphere client, but I still don't have the option of choosing my domain when I go to add permission.

I am not very familiar with all these vmware tools, so I am sure I am doing something wrong. Any help would be appreciated. Not sure what information would be helpful on my end for resolving the problem, so if anything is needed, let me know.

Unable to register vSphere Web Client after SSL Certifcate Replacement

Hi all,

I have been following Derek Seaman's Blogs on replacing all certificates in vSphere 5.1 and have since turned to the VMware KB Articles. I have replaced the certificates for SSO, Inventory Service and vCenter Server with no problems (other than having to use OpenSSL-Win64 for the vCenter Certificate as I just couldnt get the x86 version's certificate to work, makes no sense, but I'll take the small win).

When following the vmware guide to replace the web service certificate, http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&docTypeID=DT_KB_1_1&externalId=2035010, I get to step 12, Register the VMware vSphere Web Client back to vCenter Single Sign On, and receive the following error:

VMware Tech Support suggested I uninstall all components, delete all databases and try again. I have done this and have the exact same result.

Has anyone seen this or been able to resolve it?

vCenter 5.1 U1 to 5.1 Update 2 SSO Upgrade Question

$

Attempting to update VCenter from 5.1U1 to 5.1U2 and starting with the SSO server. When kicking off the install it immediately advises “Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use ADD/Remove Programs on the Control Panel.”

Surely one doesn’t have to uninstall SSO simply to upgrade it? Anyone else experienced this or performed the upgrade from U1 to U2 without incident?

Network issues with HP 10GE card after upgrade from Esxi 5.0 to 5.5

Dear All,

I upgraded my Esxi to 5.5 on a HP DL 380 G7. After the upgrade was in place, the 10GE (HP NC523 SFP by Qlogic) network card resets again and again. If I use the Broadcom onboard NIC's instead, everything works fine. The newest driver is installed and the card is flashed with the newest firmware but no success. As long as the Card is not assigned to a virtual switch it looks ok, connected with 10000 full. If assign it to a virtual switch, it takes a few seconds, then the connection state changes to down, then the card is not shown, then it returns and shows "connected with 10000 full" and so on. The vmkernel log says:

qlcnic 0000:0b:00.1: vmnic5:qlcnic_process_wait_event:743:Timelimit up.

qlcnic 0000:0b:00.1: vmnic5:qlcnic_dev_request_reset:7213:Changed the adapter dev_state to NEED_RESET.

qlcnic 0000:0b:00.1: vmnic5:qlcnic_check_health:7819:Adapter not in operational state(Heartbit Failure), resetting adapter.

This happens again and again until I remove it from the virtual switch, then it stays connected.

The card is used for network only, not for any storage (iscsi or nfs).

In Esxi 5.0 no problems at all.

Any advice is welcome.

Kind regards

How to start with VSPHERE on a single server Dell PowerEdge T420?

Hi

I am a realy new bigginer with virtualizations and have just worked with small invironments. I want to know if i can use Vsphere on my new server.I could not find any paper or solution for running Vsphere on such a local storage technology. The biggest question i have is how to manage my storage to use it with virtual machines. I have plan to make 4 VMs on this new server

I have this configuration on my server

03 st 300 GB 15K RPM SAS (for datastorage in a RAID 5 configuration, useful datadisk is two)

01 st PERC H710 Adapter RAID Controller, 512MB NV Cache RAID 5

02 st Internal Dual SD Module with 2x 2GB SD Card (for the VMware software)

Adding new hosts to existing environment with ESX 4 hosts, which ESX version should I consider?

$

I have an environment with 4 clusters totaling around 50 hosts. There are 2 clusters with intel based processor hosts and 2 others with AMD based processors. All hosts are running VMware ESX 4.1. My question is, in the new cluster, should I keep the environment consistent and install ESX 4.1 as well? Or is it fine to install ESXi 5.5? I know I will have to upgrade vCenter if I installed 5.5 but should I also upgrade the current hosts to 5.5 or they will work fine with 4.1? How about datastore and block sizes, would that all stay the same? How about licenses.

Thanks!

Database user name and password (vpxuser?)

$

Hi all, i'm in the process of planning an upgrade of vCentre server from 4.1x to 5.1x.  vCentre is running on MSSQL 2005 32bit on Windows 2008 server R2. Once i've updated MSSQL 2005 to the latest SP I plan to do a simple install as everything's on the same box.

My issue is that I've inherited this system and unfortunately there is no documentation on what the database user name and password is related to vCenter.

In the MSSQL management studio I can see a database user called "vpxuser" which seems to have "db_owner" permissions for both MSDB and VCDB.  I assume this is the user i need to give when prompted during the vCentre upgrade?

The problem is i do not have a password for this "vpxuser" account, so my question is, am i safe to reset this user's password right before i upgrade? and then use these new credentials when prompted?

Thanks in advance,

Matt

ESXi Host Not Responding after 5.5u1 upgrade

$

I am having an odd issue after performing a 5.5u1 interactive upgrade on one of my servers.

Basically, the upgrade appeared to work and the server boots. I can ping it and connect to it long enough to receive the certificate error in a web browser. However, the system appears to be so hung on doing some sort of process, that everything else I do times out before it can be completed. This results in me being basically unable to manage it from the vSphere client. I CAN interact with it at the console, but actions are painfully slow and I can see that the boot media is constantly busy doing something (though I don't know what), leading me to believe that it is effectively IO-bound on some internal process. There are no virtual machines running.

I'm looking for assistance in determining what failed and correcting it. I am vSphere-familiar, but I am a network engineer primarily, so assume I'm a noob for the purposes of explaining your answers.

Here is what I've done so far:

-Installed 5.5u1 interactively off of a DVD using the file: VMware-VMvisor-Installer-5.5.0.update01-1623387.x86_64.iso. This is the same disc I successfully upgraded an identical machine with only a few hours earlier.

-Re-installed 5.5u1 interactively off the same DVD.

-Allowed the system to just run for several hours in case there was some sort of post-install process running to give it time to complete.

-Repeatedly tried to "connect" to the box from vSphere client and web client through the vCenter server. (VCenter 5.5.0-10000 is running as a VM on the other box). Receive "Cannot contact the specified host..."

-Rebooted several times.

-Confirmed that the host is reachable through the configured address from VCenter and other devices (by using Ping). All devices are on the same VLAN with no firewall or private VLANs or anything goofy that would limit connectivity.

The environment is as follows:

-2x ML150 G6 w/2x E5504 CPUs (Quad 2.0Ghz), 48GB RAM. Onboard NIC plus quad 1Gbps PCIe NIC. 32Gb USB flash media (boot). No internal disk.

-2x FreeNAS 9.2.1.3 x64 iSCSI devices. About 10 targets in a dual-VLAN multipath configuration.

-1x Cisco 2960 Ethernet switch. Multiple VLANs. iSCSI VLANs are setup for jumbo frames.

The problem child is one of the ML150s. The other ML150 upgraded without issue and is working fine.

It is possible, though I am unsure, that the problem ML150 had been running a 4.x version and was upgraded to 5.1, while the working system was a 5.1 fresh build.

Both systems were working without issue prior to the upgrade (on 5.1)

Any assistance you can provide would be helpful. My next step is to blow away the system and just rebuild it, but I'd like to avoid that.

Hi all,

I'm trying to setup a RAID 5, using this a PCI E Megaraid M1015 SAS Controller. The thing is that controller is not

able to see the drivers while loading.

0 JBOD(s) found on the host adapter.

0 JBOD(s) handled by Bios.

0 Virtual Drive(s) found on the host adapter.

I have four(4) 3.0GB drives. 1TB each one.

Should I change something on the BIOS side ? Why the controller is not able to see those Drives ?

Finally on the WebBios screen there is no drivers availables to create groups.

Any hint ?

Thanks in advanced!

vSphere works on 1 computer but not the other

I've been using vSphere on a recently built computer. It's got a ASRock P67 Extreme4 Gen3, i7, 16GB RAM, and a GTX 560Ti video card (running Win7). The issue is that I get that lovely error message whenever I get into my ESXi box that there seems to be no solution for short of re-installing Windows. The error message is:

"An internal error occured in the vSphere Client. Details: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation"

The strange thing is that everything works fine on my Toshiba laptop. I'm able to do anything on there but clicking on anything on my desktop throws that error message above.

Hello ,

I would like to know the below information for one my sites.

1. I would like to migrate my existing V center server from 5.1 to 5.5. For this do I need to get license separately for 5.5 or I can manage with 5.1 license?

2. I have a set of ESXi hosts with 4.0 , 4.1 and 5.0 and 5.1. I just want to upgrade ESXi as well to 5.5. for this any licenses are needed or automatically the licenses will be upgraded?

3. Am planning to implement DRS with the above changes.

Appreciate the help on this

Thanks,

Installing Profile-Driven Storage via vCenter 5.1 Server fails

3 Windows 2008 R2 servers (SQL Server hosting SSO and VCDB - SSO server - vCenter server)

  • Create the SSO database and vCenter database without any issues
  • SSO service installs without any issues
  • Inventory service installs without any issues
  • Installing vCenter service and it breaks when installing the Profile_Driven Storage service

I reviewed the following KB: VMware KB: Installing Profile-Driven Storage via vCenter Server fails with an error code 1603

None of the KB applies to the installation. Everything looks correct. Deleted everything and attempted the installation again, on fresh built servers, same result.

VIM-SPS-msi.log and VMINST.log are attached for your review.

NOT_IMPLEMENTED vmcore/vmm/cpu/fpu.c:452

I am trying to run ESXi on a lab box.  I was not able to install 5.5 (purple screen of death during install), but was able to install 5.1.  Now, in the vSphere client when I configure any VM to boot from an ISO (I've tried Win XP and CentOS Linux) I get;

VMware ESX unrecoverable error: (vcpu-0) vcpu-0:NOT_IMPLEMENTED vmcore/vmm/cpu/fpu.c:452

The ESXi box has an AMD A4 CPU.  The ISOs are uploaded in the datastore.  My client machine has VMWare Workstation 9 on it and that works fine (probably irrelevant, but just mentioning in case there is some conflict).

Any ideas?  I wasn't coming up with much via google.  Is this saying there is some sort of issue with FPU virtualization and the A4 and/or chipset on the box?  AS far as I can tell, the A4 supports AMD's virtualization technologies.

four issues I encountered deploying vCenter and SRM 5.5 in a Windows environment

$

I would like to share some installation ‘gotchas’ that I encountered while deploying vCenter and Site Recovery Manager 5.5. Although relatively minor issues, I hope that you may found this useful and may avoid some of the same headaches that I encountered.

Please note: these solutions are all based on VMware KBs (noted below) and were tested against vCenter Server and Site Recovery Manager 5.5 running on Windows Server 2012, with SQL Server 2012 SP1 supporting databases.

Connecting to vSphere Web Client Fails

Symptom:

      • HTTP Status 404

Solution:

      • When installing the vSphere Web Client, maintain the default installation directory. Avoid installing this component to an alternate drive or location (i.e. D:) [1].

Encountered a Perl Error While Installing SRM

Symptom:

      • SRM installation fails with the following message: “Failed to update Perl installation directories…”

Solution:

      • When specifiying the installation directory for SRM, avoid using long path names or spaces. Instead, use short paths: (i.e. D:\SRM) [2].

Storage Monitoring Service Fails

Symptom:

      • This issue can present itself in a few different ways, but it is very evident when looking at the overall health of the vCenter Server from the Server Status screen.

Solution:

      • This may be encountered when a custom service account is being used to start the vCenter Server, instead of the default Local System account. Ensure that the VMware vSphere Profile-Drive Storage Service is also being run using the same service account as the VMware VirtualCenter Service [3].

Update Manager Fails to Start

Symptom:

      • The VMware Update Manager service fails to start when using an SQL Server 2012 database, and the log may contain: “Panic: Unable to allocate memory”

Solution:

      • After installing VUM using the native ODBC client, I was able to initially connect to Update Manager using the the vSphere Client; however, at some point I began to consistently see this issue. To work around this, I removed the native SQL Server ODBC DSN for the VUM database, and replaced it with the non-native client. This solution may seem a bit counter intuitive, but it is based on a VMware KB [4].

Hi,

I plan to upgrade my system architecture :

2 HP DL380G7 with ESXi

1 HP P2000 with 3 datastore

1 vSphere Essentials plus 4.1U3

I want to upgrade to vSphere Essentials plus 5.5 but I don't know how to proceed.

Should I migrate all my VM on a different server to upgrade the DL380 servers ?

Should I create temporary datastore on my P2000 for the upgrade ?

Thank you for your answers

Cannot install vSphere 5.5 on Server 2012 R2 DataCenter

Hi,

I am having difficuly installing vSphere 5.5 components on a server 2012 R2 Datacenter Server.

If I use the simple install method it installs the SSO components just fine, then it fails to install the vSphere Web Client and asks you to install sepearately.

When you try to do this the following error occurs

'File not found.... Z:\\vSphere-WebClient\VMware-WebClient.exe"

vSphere1.jpg

If I try and copy the VMware-WebClient.exe from the DVD to the filesystem the following error occurs.

vSphere2.jpg

I have turned off UAC in the registry, I have install ADLS and this has not made any difference, it has allowed me to install the vCenter Inventory Service & vCenter Server.

The VCDB is running on a seperate Server 2012 R2 with SQL 2012.

Hope someone can help.

Thanks

Intel x520-sr1 not detected by VMWare 5.1

Hi,

I have an issue with a Server, based on Intel S2400SC Board.

I already upgraded to latest Motherboard FW and tried 2 different Intel X520-SR1 Cards.

The problem is, that during BIOS Boot, I see the card but under VMWare, the card is not detected and shown.

I already downloaded and installed ixgbe-3.11.32-870840.zip and also latest ixgbe-3.14.3-1052866.zip. Same issue with both.

VMWare Server is also on latest patchlevel (1021289)

The Server was a blank installed new server, but I also tried to install again (VT-D is active in the Bios)

I have no idea, tried also several PCI-E Slots. At the moment only a RAID Card and x520-sr1 is added to the server, same problem.

I have 2 other servers (Different Motherboard), also with 5.1 and Intel X520-SR1. They have no issues, but only run driver ixgbe 3.7. They are upgraded from 4.1 to 5.1. maybe I have to try this way.

I hope anybody has an idea.

Thanks

Michi

Login issue with domain accounts to vCSA 5.5

Hello everybody,

I've a problem about AD authentication with vCSA SSO 5.5, these're my installation steps:

- vCSA 5.5 ovf template deployed with standard installation and joining in AD (domain functional level is Windows 2003).

- DNS host and related PTR records has been added.

- vCSA ports on enterprise firewall are open;

- I've changed default certificates with custom certificates following this KB VMware KB: Configuring Certificate Authority (CA) signed certificates for vCenter Server Appliance 5.5

- After CA configuration, I've added Identity my enterprise domain in identity sources and I've created Administrator role in vcenter server with my domain account.

So, when I try to connect to web client, I login successfully, but I get this error:

Client is not authenticated to VMware Inventory Service - https://10.74.70.140:10443

Unable to create the managed object for - urn:vmomi:AuthorizationManager:AuthorizationManager:C96635F6-B5A6-4045-AE92-18DD7A3DE2F0.

So, I've rebooted vCSA, but at reboot (and also if i restart vpxd service only), I get this error:

Registering vCenter Server Inventory Service... failed

Please, restart vmware-vpxd to enable the Inventory Service.

Updating the vCenter endpoint in the Lookup Service.

Intializing registration provider...

Getting SSL certificates for https://FQDN:7444/lookupservice/sdk

Failed trying to retrieve token: ns0:RequestFailed: Error occured looking for solution user :: More than one solution user found

Return code is: ServiceNotResponding

Starting ldap-server..done

Starting vmware-vpxd: success

Waiting for vpxd to initialize: .success

So, I can't work with my domain account.

How can I solve this issue?

Thank you very much

Regards

Daniele
