Backing up VM using CA BrightStor Arcserve backup

$

Was hoping someone can help me out.  We just installed our first VMware server a week ago.  We are running a licenses trial version of 5.5.  We use Computer Associates BrightStor ARCServe backup (v16.5) to backup all our servers.  I was attempting to load the VMware client on our VM and proxy server for VM backups.  Attempted to run the backup but it errored out.  CA's tech support looked at the error log and said the reason it failed was because we did not have an ESX server licenses for VStorage API.  Is there a way of getting this licenses for the trial version or do I have to get a full blown licenses for Hypervisor in order to get this licenses?

TIA,

Jim

Autodeploy and Virtual Machine Swap File Location

$

I am looking at implementing Autodeploy and have had great success in my lab except for one thing. I am needing to set the host configuration "Virtual Machine Swap File Location" We use the DRS option to let the hosts configure a datastore for the Virtual Machine Swap Files. We place these disks that are locally attached to the hosts so as to not waste SAN resources and to not waste band witdh on replicating these files. I set this on my reference host and updated the host profile. The problem is the when the host reboots it is unset and the host shows compliant with the profile. I have been unable to find any documentation on setting this via a host profile and answer file.

I am running vCenter 5.5a and ESXi 5.5a

Thanks

Upgrade to 5.5 U1 using update manager stays non-compliant

I have a weird issue with upgrading my env to 5.5 U1 using update manager, after performing the remediate UM doesn't recognize the host has been upgraded and stays in non-compliant.

using the ISO to perform a manual upgrade gives a mixed result, a few hosts report to be compliant while most others stay in the same non-compliant state.

the upgrade itself seems to have gone without issues, build number is 1623387. we are upgrading from a mixture of builds ranging from 5.0 to 5.5 non U1 but the issue doesn't seem to be isolated to a particular upgrade path.

we are using the HP custom image downloaded from my vmw to do the installations, exact same ISO is imported in VUM. (profile: HP-ESXi-5.5.0-Update1-ISO-5.73.21)

does anyone have any idea what the issue might be here?

thank you in advance

vCenter Server showing 0 in vCenter Home

I'm very new to vmware.  Actually this is my first attempt to install a trial version to hopefully test a little before purchasing in 2014.  My question, I installed ESXI 5.5.  I logged in and created my win 2008 r2 virtual server.  I then installed (simple install)  vCenter Server.  I log into the web client and don't see any vcenter servers, unable to create a datacenter.  Can someone tell me what I'm missing, or what I missed to configure or setup?  Many thanks in advance for your help.

Hi gurus

Its me again looking for help.

I have a cluster that I need to bring from 5.1 to 5.5, on this cluster is where I keep all desktops, master images for desktop pools and all the good stuff

my project is to upgrade this enviroment to 5.5.

  1) Is there a guide that I can use for this

  2) Should I treat this upgrade as if was server cluster

Can some one just give a cold run on what my steps should be in order to accomplish this.

Thanks gurus

My customer want's to install ESX1 5.50 on a host connected to storage HP MSA2012. As far as I can see on the compatibility list, this units is only supported on ESX Versions up to 4.1. Will this work OK, or should he buy new Storage?

vCenter Appliance to Physical server, 3 hosts, small environment

$

Greetings all.

I am trying to move a vCenter Appliance to a physical server.  It is a small setup with only 3 hosts.  I am somewhat new to VMware.  If I have to set up single sign-on again and add the hosts again, that is not a problem.  I do not have any clusters set up yet, it's a new installation. Actually there is a cluster but neither DRS nor HA is turned on.  I want to remove the cluster but not the hosts.  We have a small Windows 2008 R2 AD domain.  The vCenter Server is a member of the domain, as are the ESXi hosts.  It is version 5.5.

Is it OK if I simply remove the vCenter appliance by shutting it down and removing it from disk and inventory, and then install the physical server and add the hosts to it, delete the appliance server from AD and add the new physical server to AD, and set up SSO again on the new server - will that work?  Will I run into any issues/problems?

I should note that the reason behind my doing this is to implement vSA on the 3 hosts, and according to what I have read, I cannot run the vCenter appliance on a VSA host, and all 3 hosts must be VSA hosts if each one is to share its storage with the other 2. I also read that I cannot add any VMs to the hosts until the VSA cluster has been created.  So I need to ditch the current cluster and take the hosts out of it.  Only one host is still underneath the existing cluster.  So I am hoping that by performing those steps above that I can add my hosts to the new vCenter physical server once it's up and running, and just delete the old one.  If that is not the way to go about this, please point me in the right direction and you will be worth your weight in gold as far as I am concerned.

Thanks very much in advance,

Sam

Install ESXi from USB media

I know there is an official document about this and lots of information on the web, but I wanted to share my version...I think its mighty useful. This is from a Windows workstation and the procedure is written from memory, but it should get you there. This should also help those wanting to PXEboot. Also, if you get a big enough drive, you can save the OVA files for vCenter etc and have the whole kit-and-kaboodle in one place!

-----<I'm not responsible if you blow up your workstation e.g. format your hard drive>-------

1.Download SYSLINUX from http://www.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php/Download and unzip the contents. For the example, I'll assume you unzipped to c:\temp\syslinux
2.Insert a USB flash drive (even the new ones that don't have the RMB set work with this)
3.Identify what drive letter the flash drive received. For the example, I'll assume E:
4.Make sure it is formatted FAT32
5.Launch an elevated command prompt (as administrator)
6.type C:\temp\syslinux\bios\win32\syslinux.exe -mfa E: (MAKE SURE E IS YOUR FLASH DRIVE) and hit enter
7.Copy the following files to the root of your flash drive
    •C:\temp\syslinux\bios\memdisk\memdisk
    •C:\temp\syslinux\bios\com32\menu\menu.c32
    •C:\temp\syslinux\bios\com32\elflink\ldlinux\ldlinux.c32
    •C:\temp\syslinux\bios\com32\libutil\libutil.c32
8.Copy the ISO files of the ESXi installs you need (yep, you can have more than one depending on the size of the drive)
9.Create a syslinux.cfg file with the following (modify as you need for more entries)

DEFAULT menu.c32
MENU TITLE ESXi-5.5.0-1331820 Installation Menu
NOHALT 1
PROMPT 0
TIMEOUT 80
LABEL Universal Image
  KERNEL memdisk
  APPEND iso
  INITRD /ESXi-5.5.0-1331820-Universal.iso
  MENU LABEL ESXi-5.5.0-1331820 ^Universal Image

L2 / L3 Cache problem when 5 or more CPUs asigned to a VM

Hi people, i'm having a nice purple screen problem with ESXi 5.5 1331820.

When i put on any VM more than 4 cores (that can be 5, 6, 7 or 8 CPUs) assigned to a VM with Windows, Linux or without SO, the ESXi system crashes with a purple screen putting down all the VM's and there's no more to do, only try to understand the PSOD and reset.

esxi5.jpg

Also, here you can see that there are some things that i can find on the VMware KB, like:

ESX/ESXi hosts fail with a purple diagnostic screen and report the error: #PF Exception(14) (2012404)

VMware KB: ESX/ESXi hosts fail with a purple diagnostic screen and report the error: #PF Exception(14)

(because the second line says):

#PF Exception 14 in world 36569:vmm1:New_tes IP .......

Also i read:

Understanding Exception 13 and Exception 14 purple diagnostic screen events in ESX 3.x/4.x and ESXi 3.x/4.x/5.x (1020181)

VMware KB: Understanding Exception 13 and Exception 14 purple diagnostic screen events in ESX 3.x/4.x and ESXi 3.x/4…

and, this last one that it appears to have the same problem (or not?) but in a workstation environment

L2 Cache problem when install ESXi 5 on VMware Workstaion 8

https://communities.vmware.com/message/1899934?tstart=0#1899934

but after reading all, i didn't find any way to see whats going on in this case, that i say, only happens when i power on a VM with more than 4cpus (that can be 5,6,7, or 8vcpus assigned)

Host Hardware:

Motherboard: Supermicro H8SGL-F   (also i tried BIOS factory default, the same PSOD occurs, bios has the last update)

CPU: Opteron 6128             -    Dynatron cooling

RAM: 16gb   (2x 8GB Kingston 1333 unbuff-not reg. dimm DDR3)

USB: Kingston 16GB USB3.0 (in usb2.0 port) - ESXi system boot

HDD: IDE 80gb Hitachi

HDD: SATA2: 320gb 7200rpm 16mb cache - Western Blue

Does any have idea about this? or if i'm doing something wrong? Thank you in advance!

Unable to connect Remote Arcconf to ESXi 5.5

If i try to execute arcconf.exe, I've got the following error:

CIM Exception: Invalid namespace.

Please make sure maxRAID CLI provider is installed and running in ESX server.

  • My Adaptec Contoller is: 2405
  • Server: ESXi 5.5
  • Client: Windows 7 x64
  • Arcconf: v7_31_18856

CIM-Server on ESXi is running and port 5989 is open. There is no driver or CIM-Provider available for ESXi 5.5, it should be integrated out of the box.

Is there any solution?

Thanks

vCenter Upgrade from 5.5 to 5.5u1 problem

I have a small two host cluster co-hosted at a datacenter.  The vCenter is running on a W2012 VM with 4 CPU's and 12GB of memory.  After upgrading vCenter from 5.5 to 5.5u1 I noticed the CPU was constantly running at about 30%, I have process explorer running in the tray as a task manger replacement.  In PE I noticed that both the Inventory Java service and the vpxd.exe where using cpu resources constantly.  I should also note that the C# client is very slow to respond, bordering on useless.  The Web client is functional, maybe a little slow.  Also since I am having these issue I have not been able to update the ESXi hosts.  Some testing revealed that if I stop the Inventory Service the CPU utilization drops to almost zero.  Does anyone have any ideas what may be going on.  This is a very simple setup, so I've been thinking about putting a vCenter appliance up and moving the hosts over.  This should solve the issue but would not reveal what is causing the issue..

Also, i have a remote datacenter with 3 ESXi host (5.1.0 too) for DRP purposes.

Upgrading a Dell Poweredge with VMWARE from Dell (Free) 5.1 to 5.5

$

Hi folks:

I'm looking for some information and advice today.

We have a single Dell PowerEdge with (2) 8-core Intel CPUs running a Dell version of VMWARE ESX 5.1. I don't think we ever bought a license, just used the one from Dell. Today, we have purchased VMWARE 5.5 Essentials.

I was looking online and Dell has a VMWARE ISO for 5.5. THe thing is, i'm not sure if I should use that ISO or not to upgrade our Single Dell Server or not.

When I tried using VEEAM to do a backup in preparation, it says that the version of ESXi that we are running is not supported. IS that because it's kind of the free one from Dell?

If we use the new Dell 5.5 ISO to upgrade, will we still not be able to use it because it's somehow a free version?

I'm undertaking a project to put a licensed version of VMWARE 5.5 in today, along with a licensed copy of VEEAM. THIs isn't a VMWARE question about VEEAM. It's more of a question about why the Dell partner ISO for 5.1 triggers VEAM and other backup solutions to say they are not supported.

If I want to upgrade my existing single server to VMWARE 5.5, I guess I just am looking for help on how to ensure that in the end, it's fully representing the licenses we purchased. I would normally think of using a partner specific ISO, like the 5.5 ISO from DELL. It's just that in the end, I want to make sure that it's fully licensed and works with 3rd party applications.

Any answers and help would be greatly appreciated.

Fresh vCentre5.5U1 instead of upgrading from 4.1U2?

hi all,

***************************************************

current production environment:

vCentre 4.1U2

VM1: Windows 2008R2 - vcentre role

VM2: Windows 2008R2 - vcentre SQL DB

hosts:

8x fat ESX4.1U2

130-odd VMs

***************************************************

We are thinking of doing a fresh install of vCentre5.5U1 on a new VM (holding all roles) and decommissioning our existing vCentre VMs.

Apart from losing the historical data, would there be any issues on this approach? What else would we lose?

Help is much appreciated

Upgrade from ESXi 5.1 to 5.5 hangs at tools.t00

All - Have been running ESXi 5.1 successfully for sometime. Downloaded the ESXi 5.5 install ISO to upgrade and ran into serious issues.

Booted from the CD, the server hangs and stops the install at tools.t00. No matter what I do, it always stops. Consequently it has also corrupted the boot capability for 5.1.

Any help would be VERY much appreciated!

Thanks in advance

Although you may want forms for rental properties helping you select and decide on the buy of a residence, you should also perform your own analysis for your financial commitment programs. By doing aspects on your own, you preserve from needless pressure to buy even before you have discovered the most ideal residence. Making cautious choices based on what you prefer and your programs best can be carried out if you take an impartial strategy to all the qualities that are within your making an investment capacity which will be limited by whether you anticipate to handle it (be a landlord) or seek the services of someone or a control organization to look after it for you.
