I am running vCenter 4.1.0 345043 with 6 ESXi (4.1.0 348481) hosts. I'm not ready to make the jump to 5.X yet, but I'd like to update my hosts to Update 2 (502767) to facilitate installation of HP Management Agents that are specifically bundled for ESXi 4.1 Update 2. I see from the release notes (http://www.vmware.com/support/vsphere4/doc/vsp_esxi41_u2_rel_notes.html) that I can utilize one of two methods:
- VMware vCenter Update Manager. vSphere module that supports direct upgrades from ESXi 3.5 Update 5, ESXi 4.0.x, and ESXi 4.1 to ESXi 4.1 Update 1.
- vihostupdate. Command-line utility that supports direct upgrades from ESXi 4.0 and ESXi 4.1 Update 1 to ESXi 4.1 Update 2. This utility requires the vSphere CLI.
I previously used vihostupdate method to upgrade from 4.0 -> 4.1 and I'm wondering if this is still the most efficient method. I've never used Update Manager. Do you have a recommendation as to which method might be best?
Any HOWTO/KB links for these respective methods would be appreciated as well...
As always, thank you for any and all feedback!
