It is possible to use the PSC 6.0 "temporary" with a vCenter 5.5 pointing to it?

Web client for ESXi
Hi,
I've just installed ESXi 5 on my bare-metal server in order to deploy instances on it.
Now I'm installing vSphere Client to log-in to the server.
Since I'm using the freeware version of ESXi, am I allowed to use the web client, and how?
I'm sorry for the newbie question, I'm new in VMware.
Thanks!
VMWare 5.5 Windows Server 2008 R2

This occures after the Upgrade to 5.5
PSC and maximum VMware solutions
What is meant with a maximum of 10 VMware solutions in 1 vSphere domain. We have 10 Virtual Centers, 10 SRM servers and also 2 servers for VRealize Operations manager. Is this 22 solutions or 3 solutions? And what happens when you go over the limit?
Best iSCSI config for ESXi 5.5 to HP MSA 2040 for failover and dual controller support
Gidday folks and thanks in advance for anyone with tips to offer.
I'm having "fun" trying to determine the best way to configure the iSCSI connections from a host server running ESXi 5.5U2 connected via dual DirectAttach cables to a dual controller HP MSA2040 SAN.
The SAN has 2 large vdisks running RAID10, each vdisk being a single datastore with one owned by Controller A (with B as a fallback) and the other owned by Controller B (with A as a fallback).
I have a pair of SFP+ ports on the server connected to the SAN using 10Gb DirectAttach cables with SFP+'s at each end and both the server and SAN seem to be happy with that arrangement. At the SAN end, one DA cable is connected to Port A-1 (first port on Controller A) and the other DA cable is connected to Port B-1 (first port on Controller B). The idea being datastoreA would usually be accessed via DAcableA on Port A-1 and datastoreB would usually be accessed via DAcableB on Port B-1 with either port being able to pick up control of a second vdisk/datastore if the other controller failed.
From what I can find online, VMware seems to favour NIC binding as a best practice for redundancy over multiple port iSCSI connections and so have a single NIC as the main iSCSI connection with the other NIC as a failover backup path for redundancy, but if I did that, it would mean whichever iSCSI connection was chosen as the active one, the controller connected to the standby one would not be accessible so one that controller's vdisk would failover to using the SAN's other disk controller for both vdisks killing the benefits of dual controllers sharing the workload.
How can I have ESXi 5.5U2 setup so that access to one datastore/vdisk is normally through one iSCSI port/cable and access to the other vdisk/datastore is normally through the other iSCSI port/cable with each one being the failover backup for the other?
I've never had to set-up a SAN in this fashion before so I'm very green to this. Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated. The HP best practices shows the host server cabled up with dual iSCSI cables with one in controller A and the other in Controller B but they don't show how to configure vSphere to make that work in practice. Also if we add a second server with the same setup except using the second port on each of the SAN controllers, are they setup the same way?
Thanks and remember some fairly plain English responses would be most appreciated. Apologies if I missed any typos!
Updating a 5.5 SSO server
Hi all
Have a vSphere 5.5 vCenter server (build 1312298) with SSO installed on its own on another server. Was thinking of upgrading the SSO server to Update 2d.
Question I'd like to know about is any gotchas or things I need to be aware of ?
So far all i can think of is the following with regards givig me Problems ....
- Install location (ie. where the SSO is installed)
- certificates (it has none)
- credentials (I have all the local credentails if needbe)
As its on a VM, I'll snapshot it first and then do the upgrade just to be safe.
Anyone done something similar ?
Many thanks in advance

vCenter & ESXi 5.0 Essentials upgrade to 5.5
Hi
Im hoping to upgrade my vMware 5.0 Essentials environment (vCenter & ESXi hosts) to 5.5.
Can someone tell me if this can be achieved with the existing 5.0 Essentials license or is there a new license requirement?
Could anyone point me towards a good reference/document that outlines how this can be achieved also?
ANy information is much appreciated
Upgrade vCenter 5.5 U2 with Multiple vCenters to vSphere 6.0
I'm in the process of planning out a vSphere 5.5 U2 upgrade to vSphere 6.0. This particular environment is currently architected as follows:
Looking at KB 2108548 (http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2108548), it appears this setup is being deprecated in vSphere 6.0. As such, I believe my vSphere Upgrade process looks like the following:
- Deploy a new separate external vCenter 5.5 U3 SSO (only) Windows server or VCSA.
- Re-point/re-register all four vCenter Server's Inventory Service, vCenter Service and Web Client to the new SSO server as described in KB 2033620 (http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2033620).
- Uninstall SSO from the original vCenter server it was hosted on.
- Upgrade the new external SSO server to PSC (6.0).
- Upgrade the four Windows vCenter servers to vCenter 6.0.
Am I missing anything or are there any gotchas I should be aware of? Thanks in advance for your help.
Confused a bit on OEM drivers and VMware HCL
Sometimes OEM drivers, Vendor downloads and the HCL drive me crazy.
In particular I am running IBM System X boxe which seem to OEM all their cards. Emulex, Qlogic and LSI.
So everytime I go to patch I get three different versions of the recommended drivers:
1. VMware HCL will tell me one thing
2. The Vendor page will tell me another. I will admit that the Emulex page is pretty good at telling you what firmware/driver release you need with your System X box
3. IBM usually has firmware, but not a driver
I have it nailed down for the most part with the Emulex cards. But my LSI cards which are 1000:0079:1014:03b2 (hardware idenitifier) is listed with a very old driver in HCL. So is the HCL just old data?
ESXi Hp proliant N40L cant find nic error
I Have spent the best part of 6 hours trying to troubleshoot this issue. I have tried the standard iso and the custom HP iso to no avial. I always get the error saying It cant detect the NIC during install. Can anyone help with this. I cant seem to find any info about this online?
Is version 5.5 and 6 not compatible? Is this a lost cause?
If I bought a new nic to plug into the mobo will that work?
I have the broadcom NC107i nic.

vSphere 6, 'Skipping' installation
Hi Everyone!
I just wondered if someone could please give me some assistance with a brand new installation of the Free version of vSphere Hypervisor v6.
I've downloaded the ISO, got my Licence key..burnt to CD and also installed to USB Stick. Both give me same results below.
First of all the installation hangs at 'Initializing IOV' so I skip this step by doing SHIFT+O and 'noIOMMU'.
The installation then goes from loading all components etc (with the yellow screen) straight to the screen which says 'Download tools to manage this host from etc' message, but without completing the installation process. It doesn't scan for hardware, or ask me a hard drive to install?
I've repeated exactly the same steps, using the same ISO in a VMWare Fusion VM and it installs fine?
Appreciate any comments, please ask for more information if needed?
Thank you!
Kind Regards,
Christian
VSphere 5.1 host migration
I am in the process of replacing the hosts in our current vsphere 5.1 cluster. We are switching from AMD processors to Intel.
I have the new hosts setup as the same as the old hosts, except I have them setup with different IP addresses and host names. I just want to make sure the plan I came up with will work.
1. Move all the VM's to one host and shutdown one of the old hosts and remove it from the cluster.
2. Add one of the new hosts to the cluster.
3. Shutdown the VM's and cold boot them onto the new host.
4. Remove the other old host from the cluster.
5. Add the 2nd new host to the cluster.
The vcenter server is virtual, does anything need to be done with the that server other than start it up on the new hosts?
Would it be better to put the old hosts in maintenance mode and add the new hosts before removing them from the cluster?
Does it make a difference I give the new hosts different IP address and host names or would it be better to keep them the same?
Any suggestions or ideas?
Thanks.
Upgrading vCenter from 5.0.0 to 5.5.U2
I need to update an existing vCenter 5.0.0 to 5.5 U2 to support new ESXi 5.5 U2 hosts.
It is a simple installation.
What is the simplest way to update the vCenter, that is a Windows Server 2008 R2 VM?
Is there any step-by-spet document I can use?

New Windows 2008 R2 Server Fails vSphere Server Install with Error 1920
Band new install of Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 with all the updates.
Attempt to install vSphere Server 5.5 CU2 build 2183112.
Attempting the "Simple Install" or "Custom Install" I receive the following error when the Single Sign-On attempts to install.
"Error 1920. Service 'VMware Directory Service' (VMWareDirectoryService) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services."
The Event Log shows the following which isn't much help.
"The VMware Directory Service service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion."
I have re-downloaded the iso with the same result and even attempt to install CU1 but that also failed with the same error.
I've tried http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2069695 with the same failed results.
Install log is attached.
NEw to VMWare licencing and need assistance
I am the sole member of a small business' IT 'department' and we want to virtualize our small server infrastructure onto one server. I'm having a hard time deciding is we should go with Essentials, Essentials Plus, or VSphere standard with Vcenter server Foundations. I don't want to miss out on some cool VMWare features because I cheaped out on Essential but being a small business we don't have a lot of money to just throw around. AM I correct in assuming that my Vsphere with Vcenter foundations option would be a better option if I think I need to virtualize more then 3 servers?
Download vSphere Server 5.5 Trial
I'm trying to build my own test lab to help study for an exam. I have two ESXi 5.5 Hosts built using the Trial versions, but I can't seem to find v5.5 for vSphere Server -- only v6.0.0. I did try and install v6.0.0 and had major problems (browser issues). Is there any way I can get v.5.5 (with all updates) anywhere?

ESXi 5.5 U1 on IBM x3650 M4 Server
Hello all,
I am trying to install VMware ESXi 5.5 U1 on my IBM x3650 M4 (MT: 7915-N6A) Server but server could not boot up from 5.5 U1 ISO. I download that ISO from IBM official website only so I thin not any issue about compatibility or anything else and same server could boot with ESXi 5.0 but setup stuck at imgpayld.tgz everytime.
After that I download ISO from VMware website and got same issue. I also tried to boot from CD and USB storage, 5.5 and 5.1 ISO also but not suceed. I checked ESXi and server compatibility on VMware website, It seems together both working good.
Can anyone help me to solve out?

vcsa 6.0 upgrade failed disk space
Our VCSA 5.5 to 6.0 upgrade fails due to lack of disk space in the 6.0 appliance. Our VCSA 5.5 appliance has about a 400GB drive due to our logging and retention needs. When we try to upgrade to VCSA 6.0 it fails due to running out of disk space. How can we upgrade? It would be nice if in the installer we could specify the disk space needed before the upgrade starts.

update manager 6.0 install
Does update manager installation really use 120GB of disk space?
Just got the warning and it seems like an awfully high requirement for my small environment.
Thanks
