Hi,

I'm trying to reinstall the vsphere web client server, the uninstall was sucessfully, but when I try to run the installer again, the error 29700 occurs and the installation fails.

"Error 29700.Cleaning up extra files for Log Browser failed. Please check vminst.log in system temporary folder "

vminst.log shows the info below.

ERROR: Failed to find any child files or directories for C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\vSphereWebClient\logbrowser\, (3)

ERROR: Failed to remove directory, error 2

ERROR: Unable to delete C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\vSphereWebClient\logbrowser\.

Anyone could help me to reinstall vsphere web client server?

Thanks in advance

Danilo

Hi !!

This is myscenario:

- 01 vCenter 4.1

- 03 Hosts vSphere 4.1

Trying to run vCenter Host Agent Pre-Upgrade I get the following message: Checker connection error.

I'm trying some actions but nothing resolve.

I'd tried this:

Starting vmware-aam:Timed out waiting for vmware-aam to startup... backgrounding - failed
vCenter Pre-Upgrade check for vSphere5 - fail!!

Upgrade to 5.1 with existing NFS datastore with 4.0 environment still connected

We are in the process of aquiring new host hardware to replace 2 old 4.0 hosts. We intent to keep the existing NFS storage where the current VMs reside. The old hosts connect to the NFS share over a Juniper EX4200 switch which has enough vacant ports to bring up the new 5.1 hosts and run the new environment simultaneously with the old 4.0 envrinment. My question is will this just be as simple as connecting to the NFS share concurrently with both environments? Then shutting each VM down in the old environment, removing from inventory, then going into the new environment, importing into inventory, then powering on? Any issues with connecting simultaneously to the NFS share? Any reason to make a backup copy of each VM before doing this? Or should I create a new NFS share for the new environment and copying each VM individually and import one by one to be safe?

VCSA 5.0 to 5.1 upgrade with 1000v

I have taken a look at the KB (2033990) and read a few blogs about the migration from the vCenter Server Appliance from 5.0 to 5.1. It looks pretty straight forward, but I cannot seem to find any information about what will happen to my 1000v during that migration. I know that the 1000v is registered with the existing 5.0 vcenter and that after the upgrade the 5.1 host will assume the "network identity" of the old 5.0 box. I assume that to mean hostname, and IP address. Does anyone know if the 1000v will just hum along none-the-wiser, or do I need to do something like this: VMware KB: Migrating to a new vCenter Server with the Cisco Nexus 1000v vDS . Essentially migrate all of the vmNics to standard switches, disassociate the 1000v, upgrade vcenter, associate the 1000v, migrate all connections.

Thanks!

Installer Stuck at EULA

In order to prepare for a SAN installation so we need to have an ESXi installation ready so that it can have the Service Processor loaded on it (so we can get the SAN configured so we can get it hooked up to the blade servers so we can install ESXi on the blades). So here I am, attempting to get ESXi 5.1 installed on our last remaining spare server (it's a Gen6 HP DL160). The installer loads fine, but when I get to the EULA I can't hit F11 to proceed. Escape doesn't work either. I've tried 4 different keyboards at this point, all 4 USB ports on the server, an ESXi 5.0 disc as well, and so far I haven't been able to progress past this point.

Anyone have any ideas?

Installation of VMware Inventory service (vSphere 5.1) failed with error

The installation failed at the screen while trying to connect to SSO server with url "https://hostname:7444/lookupservice/sdk/".

The error message displayed and advised to look at vm_ssoreg.log system temporary folder. When I looked at it, below are the last two lines of the log:

[2012-09-13 08:39:15,922 main ERROR com.vmware.vim.install.cli.commands.CommandArgumentsParser] Unexpected status code: 404
[2012-09-13 08:39:15,937 main INFO com.vmware.vim.install.cli.RegTool] Return code is: ServiceNotResponding

vCenter server is on 64 bit Windows 2008 R2 and running vCenter 5.0 U1 build 804277.

I have installed SSO server without any problem and also installed vSphere Data Protection applicance and configured without any issue.

I have searched VMware knowledgebase but found no help with the existing articles. I have attached the screenshot showing the error.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Help on limited copy/paste in vSphere v5

I have a VM Console I open from VMWare vSphere version 5.0.0 Build 913577. The OS of the VM is Windows 2008 R2 64-bit Enterprise. The Copy/Paste funciton for a text file from the VM to the desktop (Windows 7 32-bit) only copies about 300 lines or 64KB though the source file is 738 KB. The piecemeal copy/paste 11 times or greater for this typical file would be highly inefficient. Would appreciate any solution for this.

Thanks,

HA reconfigure after 5.1 to 5.1U1

In poking around with some test systems after going from 5.1 to 5.1U1, I noticed the HA vib did not get updated until I did a reconfigure HA from a 5.1U1 vcenter. Is this required to be done, or is the new vib version simply cosmetic. Just am not sure after a cluster is totally moved from 5.1 to 5.1U1, that you need to reconfigure all the hosts for HA in order to get some HA patches pushed from vcenter.

SSO healthy ?

Recently built vcenter 5.1 installed with SSO running on the same Win2008 Virtual server. Setup a SQL DB on another server for SSO and vCentre.

SSO starts a service fine. Added our our AD Domain to SSO as an identity source and we can now add Domain accounts to vcentre successfully and can login okay with those AD accounts.

The issue is I wanted to add the lookup service to our "vShield 5.1 manager" when I try I get a red cross ? Assuming this has not worked I then tried to see if I can launch this URL

https://server:7444/lookupservice/sdk An XML page is displayed starting with this line below ? Should I be seeing something else ?

<soapenv:Envelopexmlns:soapenv="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/

Can anyone give me some advice please. I've tried reading various threads but I don't seem to find the what the issue could be.

Regards.

vCenter 5.1 services distribution

I am currently performing an upgrade from ESXi 4.1 to ESXi 5.1.

I"ve decided to use split the services across 2 vCenters.

I am wondering, wich services should go where, is there any recommandations regarding the best way to distribute the modules across 2 servers?

I am thinking to have: SSO, Inventory Service and vCenter Server on the first host

ant VUM, Web Client, Syslog colector and Dump Collector on the second host.

What do you think about this 'setup'?

Should I move SSO to the second host?

Moving vCenter to new Datacentre

Hi all,

At the moment i have a v5.0 vCenter in the old datacentre and want to move to a v5.1 vCenter in the new datacentre.

Can you please provide me with assistance on the best way to do this?

Questions:

Do i recycle the vCenter Server DB and the vCenter Inventory Service DB?

If the plan is to build the new vCenter and then slowly migrate hosts over, will this mean i have to build new DB's?

I've never moved a vCenter before so any help is greatly appreciated.

Thankyou.

vSphere Web Client 5.1 error when using Linked Mode

$

We have two vCenter 5.1 servers running in Linked Mode (Server 2008 R2 with remote SQL 2005). When I log in to the WebClient, I get the error "Unable to connect to vCenter Inventory Service on <servername>, and I'm only able to see the Inventory of one of the vCenter Servers.

Capture.JPG

When I take the servers out of Linked Mode, they both now show up in the Web Client, due to the new SSO service. But, of course, now they don't both show up in the VI Client, as is the advantage of Linked Mode. I'm not getting any of the typical Inventory Service issues in the VI Client (Hardware Status tab errors, etc.), only the one issue with the WC. I did find a KB article that showed some promise. http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2019346 But, alas, no joy. I've spent about 5 hours with Support working on this, and they seem to be just as stumped.

Has anyone come across this and conquered it?

Thanks a lot,

David

vSphere console/display window size error

$

I have a unique problem I've been troubleshooting for a month with no resolution. I'm hoping someone may have run across this same issue and found a resolution as it is a tough one to even Google. I'm running vSphere 5.1 (previously 5 and 4.1) on a Windows 7 x64 machine and each install has given me the same (display, console) screen. I have attached the image of what I am seeing. Within the small square allotted, you can see 'Getting Started' is where it should be and the left and right arrows take you through the tabs but there is no way to increase the screen size to see what you're doing. I can 'Open Console' from the inventory list and edit settings with no issue, so I'm not completely stuck. It's just the main display that has this issue. Changed screen res from 1920 x 1080 to every other size available but no dice. I've uninstalled/reinstalled the client, removed all registry entries and program files directories and still end up with this tiny box in the display after reinstalling. My next step would be to reinstall windows which would be a pain in the neck but will hopefully solve the problem. Wondering if anyone else here has encountered this and could throw some insight my way.

Thanks!

Upgrade vCenter 4.1 to vCenter 5.1

Hi everyone....

I have 5 ESX 4.1 server with vCEnter 4.1 and i want to migrate to ESXi 5.1. I have approximatively 100 virtual machines.

For the Esx 4.1 server, i will probably reinstall from scratch one by one.

The question i have it's for vCenter. I need to change the physical machine where my current vCenter is installed. In this case i will intall Windows 2008 R2 64bit on brand new server and install vCenter 5.1

Does i have to backup something from the old vCenter 4.1 server? If yes, what ( maybe DB )?

I will add 2 more ESXi 5.1 servers to go to 7 and like a said before, i have approximatively 100 virtual machines. With this configuration, i can't install SQL Express, i need the complete version of SQL.

Someone have some tips to configure the new vCenter 5.1 on a SQL 2008 R2 64bit ( not express )?

SSO Error 29148.STS

$

tl;dr: doing SSO basic install, bundled SQL 2K8 Express DB, getting 29148.STS error in the end ... what gives?

I'm trying to do an install of Single Sign On, Inventory Service and vCenter Server Upgrade. I'm doing basic install and using local OS account(s) only (no Active Directory). I failed on the 1st one: SSO. It ended with this error:

vCenter Single Sign On:

Error 29148.STS configuration error.

I accepted just about all defaults except for the screen:

Security Support Provider Interface Service Information

Which by default had the box checked: "Use network service account"

I unchecked this and input

User name: localmachine-hostname\localaccount (of course, I used the real local hostname and another account that has admin rights).

Password: (a password with no special characters, alphanumeric and one upper case).

Domain: localmachine-hostname

I failed to get it right the 1st couple of times, but finally it accepted and allowed me to continue on. I do not know if this is what caused the 29148.STS error or not. (Should I just leave this checked? Although this Windows box is in our AD, I do all VMware local OS user(s) only).

I _think_ the issue might be with SQL. I found this: VMware Single Sign On Error 29148.STS but can see nothing there I didn't do. This guy: http://arritdor.e-wilkin.com/2013/01/vsphere-51-upgrade-home-lab.html got the same error, started over and accepted more defaults and it worked. Searching while editing this, and found this: Howto: SSO – Simple AD Authentication with VMware 5.1 | Virten.net <-- this seems to indicate that, yea, I need to accept the default/check box for "Security Support Provider Interface Service Information"....

It appears I need to look at what I'm doing at the SQL part. I'm using the bundled SQL 2008 Express DB (currently have the bundled 2005 Express DB).

Can someone give other insight?

Hello all,

I am currently trying to install ESXI 5.1.0 U1 onto our Dell PowerEdge R620 diskless configuration.

I have a Dell EqualLogic PS6100x SAN and we are doing iSCSI boot.

The bios version is 1.6.0 in the R620 and the SAN controller firmware version is 6.0.4.

The error is as follows:

Operation Failed.

This program has encountered an error:

(Use the arrow keys to scroll)

Error (see log for more info):

Expecting 2 bootbanks, found 0.

This is happening with both 5.1.0-799733 and 5.1.0.update01-1065491

I have put a ticket in with Dell to make sure it isnt a firmware issue or a me being dumb issue.

Any suggestions at this point would be great.

Thanks,

Keith

Upgrade to 5.1 Web Client loose vCenter Server

$

Hi, I have to upgrade vCenter from 5.0 to 5.1. Before upgrade the production enroment we decide to make a test.

here the scenario:

vCenter 5.0.0 455964 with Update Manager and Web Client installed

2 ESXi 5.0.0 623860

2 Ubuntu Test VM

We have some vcenter server local user that login to vcenter i.e for update maneger, VMA, etc.

we have a principal AD called "MASTER.ENT.LOCAL" where there are the users and group to manage vsphere

we have a second AD called "VSPHERE.ENT.LOCAL", trusted with the MASTER.ENT.LOCAL where every vSphere Servers are joined (vCenter, vcloud director, esxi server, etc...)

Upgrade Procedure

 1. Installing SS0 server primary node ( TMP-SSO.VSPHERE.ENT.LOCAL)
 2. Backup of vCenter and VUM DB
 3. snapshot of vCenter VM (Step 2-3 are for Rollback procedure)
 4. upgrade vcenter inventory service on VCENTER.VSPHERE.ENT.LOCAL
 5. Upgrade vCenter Server.
 6. Upgrade of Web client

We do not receive any errors during every step

after the upgrade we cannot login whith MASTER.ENT.LOCAL users, but we can login on Web client with admin@system-domain user.

on the Web client, Administration --> Sign-on Discovery --> configuration we only sse one AD (VSPHERE.ENT.LOCAL) and we added also MASTER.ENT.LOCAL.

if we go on the Role Manager the field vCenter Server is BLANK!!!!

on the Web client admin-app page we have the vcneter signed like registered and we cannot unregistered because any login (admin@sysetm-domain or AD users) cannot login into.

it seems that web server loos vcenter

i tried to register manualy on the sso and on the IS, (http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2033620)

any suggest?

Hi

I downloaded the update1 ZIP from here. https://download2.vmware.com/patch/software/VUM/OFFLINE/release-383-20130425-023671/update-from-esxi5.1-5.1_update01.zip…

From an SSH session I then used the command:

esxcli software vib update --depot=/vmfs/volumes/4ffc928f-b4cb5877-41f5-f46d04e56de9/Patches/update-from-esxi5.1-5.1_update01.zip

I then get the summary which says nothing was installed, nothing was removed and all VIBs were skipped:

Update Result

Message: Dryrun only, host not changed. The following installers will be applied: []

Reboot Required: false

VIBs Installed:

VIBs Removed:

VIBs Skipped: VMware_bootbank_ata-pata-amd_0.3.10-3vmw.510.0.0.799733, VMware_bootbank....

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Database user name and password (vpxuser?)

$

Hi all, i'm in the process of planning an upgrade of vCentre server from 4.1x to 5.1x. vCentre is running on MSSQL 2005 32bit on Windows 2008 server R2. Once i've updated MSSQL 2005 to the latest SP I plan to do a simple install as everything's on the same box.

My issue is that I've inherited this system and unfortunately there is no documentation on what the database user name and password is related to vCenter.

In the MSSQL management studio I can see a database user called "vpxuser" which seems to have "db_owner" permissions for both MSDB and VCDB. I assume this is the user i need to give when prompted during the vCentre upgrade?

The problem is i do not have a password for this "vpxuser" account, so my question is, am i safe to reset this user's password right before i upgrade? and then use these new credentials when prompted?

Thanks in advance,

Matt
