Tiny two nodes vSphere HA and VCSA

HI,

 

I'm going to setup a tiny vSphere HA cluster (around 10-12 VMs) made of two hosts and I'm not sure how to deploy/setup vCenter VCSA.

 

For a tiny environment, is it possible to deploy VCSA in the same cluster that it control?

I know that is possible to deploy vCenter HA in a 3 hosts cluster, but that really not an option...

 

If I deploy VCSA as a MV of my 2 nodes/hosts vSphere cluster, can I still have some level of high availability for my VMs?

 

What's the suggested config for a tiny cluster?

repeatedly error

Standalone host (no vCenter) licensed Essentials (VS6-ESSL-C)

boot 8Gb USB flash ESXi 6.5.0.U01-5969303

Storage HDD 500Gb VMFS6 (from previously installed ESXi 6.7.0)

VM - Windows XPSP3 32bit (ESXi 6.5 and later (VM version 13))

1 CPU 2Gb RAM 32Gb HDD

 

want to change VM settings - get error (sometimes)

<Memory limit doesn't accept the negative value -1048576>

and observe value -1048576 at field <Memory - Limit>

 

host reboot clear this error - still some time later it appears again

 

where is my misproper - all settings are just-made

vSphere 6.7 and Network I/O Control Version Compatibility

Upgrading DVS from 5.5 to 6.0 for the vCenter 6.0 Windows to 6.7 Appliance migration.  Is Network I/O Control Version 2 able to continue running in vSphere 6.7?

VC 5.5 Upgrade to VCSA 6.5 - Invalid Appliance (OS) Root Password

Hi

 

I am trying to upgrade my Windows 2012 based Virtual Center 5.5 server to VCSA 6.5.

 

I have run the migration-assistant on the VC and am attempting to run the Appliance installer GUI on a separate machine.

 

Stage 3 is where I am having issues. I have specified the FQDN of the Windows VC which connects. The next screen then asks me for the SSO username and password and also the Appliance (OS) root password.

 

Maybe I am just doing it wrong but where is there a root password for a windows VC? Whatever I put in comes up with Invalid Appliance (OS) root password.

Does the vCenter converter transfer compressed?

Hi All

 

I plan do upgrade a server from vmware server to vSphere5 over an internet connection.

 

So basically, I will fetch the VM data files, install ESXi on the host and transfer them back to ESXi using the vCenter converter.

 

The thing is, that the VM data files (specially the .vmdk files) are about 200GB big, but compressed only about 30GB (big flat files with not much data on them).

 

What I'd like to know now, is: Does the vCenter converter transfer the VMware Server/Workstation images compressed, or do I have to calcualte the full upload time for about 200GB if transfering (an almost empty) 200GB flat disk (.vmdk)?

ESXi web ui error 500 (Internal Server Error)

When trying to access my WebUI, it runs very, very slow and then completely goes unresponsive. When I run developer tools, I'm met with several internal errors(500) as well as 'main.js:379' tied to the error code 500.

 

Has anyone experienced something similar to this, and if so any solutions or a good place to start looking? I've done some digging on the web with no luck. I havent tried restarting the Server as I cannot guarantee the Servers will come back online, and without Web access there is no way I know of to turn them on IF they dont come up. SSH is also disabled by default, for security reasons and can only be enabled via the WebUI.

 

to add some context, this happened after we upgraded to

update-from-esxi6.5-6.5_update02

Issue upgrading VCSA 6 to 6.5

We have a VCSA v6 that we are trying to upgrade to 6.5, we also have an external update manager server running on a Windows server

 

If I copy the migration-assistant folder to the VUM server and run VMware-Migration-Assistant.exe, the command prompts pops-up asking for the credentials of an old account that no longer exists in our AD, it doesn't ask for administrator@vsphere.local

When i run the wizard from the UM server i receive the error (from vcsa-ui-installer\win32\installer.exe):

Unable to retrieve the migration assistant extension on source vCenter Server. Make sure migration assistant is running on the VUM server.

One SAN two diffrent vSphere clusters?

we are trying to get our data from our old vSphere cluster ESX 5.0 to our NEW ESX 6.7 Cluster (two different vCenters)

our old SAN can work with 6.7 it is on the HCL and has been updated.

 

our new Cluster uses vSAN, i have setup one of the hosts so i can talk to the OLD SAN via a vmkernal port i setup.

however i can't seem to get any of the iSCSI luns to show up.

 

can you run a SAN on two different clusters?

if not what would the best way to migrate the data? Veeam?

vsphere upgrade 5.5U3B to 6.5 U1g- Approach for updating vmware tools and hardware

Hi there,

 

We preparing for upgrade from vSphere 5.5 U3b to 6.0. Following is our vSphere set-up;

 

* ESXi host hardware is HP DL380 Gen 8

* 1 DRS cluster with 7 ESXi hosts,

* Apprx 400 VMs

* Cluster resources configured sustain for 1 host failure

 

 

Our plan is to upgrade to vSphere 6.5 U1g with as minimum downtime as possible during upgrade.

 

 

Questions:

1. Though I have tested vCenter 6.5 U1g in test environement and found working fine, are there any issues with vCenter or PSOD complatints with ESXi with this update? is it stable?

2. We are plannig to upgrade 6 ESXi hosts during 1 weekend by vMotioning the VMs another and perform upgrade one host by another. What the best pratice to upgrade vmware tools and virtual hardware? is it ok update tools and virtual hardware 1 week later? so that If any issues observed I somthing to lay by by running VMs on 1 esxi host still runing on 5.5 U3b? will it cause any performace issues running vms with outdated tools on esxi 6.5 hosts? What would be the best way to handle this?

Essential 5 to 6 license key upgrade

We have a host with ESXi 5.1 U1 using VSphere 5 Essential license.

 

We need to upgrade this host and its license to 6.5, in order to be able to deploy an additionl new host, sharing the same VSphere 6 Essential license but requiring a minimum ESXi 6.5

We can upgrade the ESXi from 5.1 U1 to 6.5 as the current host supports it.

 

Which are the right steps for upgrading the license and the ESXi software in order to minimize the downtime / risk and be prepared to deploy the new host in next future?

 

Can we upgrade the license from VSphere 5 Essential to VSphere 6 Essential in MyVMWare and then apply the new 6 license in the current ESXi 5.1 U1 ?

Is the ESXi U1 accepting a VSphere 6 Essential license?

 

Or do we need to perform the upgrade of the ESXi at the same time of new license generation?

vCenter upgrade problem from 6.0 to 6.5

Hi guys,

 

I want to migrate my vCenter server from version 6.0 to 6.5U2. Because, when I restart my vCenter v6.0, the service (vmware-vpxd) is locked and I must manually repair that (Afterwards everything is fine). Of course, I want to upgrade because of other good updates.  I know, that migration is divided into 2 sections. First is installation of new appliance (successfully done) and second is migration from older installation to fresh installation. I have a problem with a pre-upgrade check. I had a problem, that I have a duplicate names for vDS and portgroups something like this (VMware Knowledge Base). I didn't repair it manually via database commands, but directly via vCenter's web interface - just renamed it. Afterwards, the new problem has became as you can see in picture attached below.

So, the I downloaded logs and in CollectRequirements_com.vmware.vcdb_2018_07_09_08_14 I can see a problem with Exception: global name 'exceptions' is not defined. Is it a real problem? Do you have any idea how to repair that? Should I attach any other logs?

vCenter 5.5 upgrade & SRM

Folks,

 

I'm having a bit of issue tracking down what best to do here.  I'm working on a upgrade/migration from Windows vCenter Server 5.5 to a 6.5 VCSA using the migration assistant.

 

The question comes in, with a implementation of SRM.  First, there are several reasons why we want to essentially abandon the current SRM environment.  It's not fully setup and there are some major changes we would like to make to it.

 

So, my question is, can I just follow through with the Migration as-is, or do I need to take steps prior to remove SRM.  If I start the migration as-is, will I hit a wall with the migration assistant?  For example, will it fail since it's too big of a jump for SRM, not going to 6.0 first?

 

My plan after the vCenter upgrade would be to just stand up a new server OS to house SRM, and install fresh.  The replication is handled by the arrays.

Previous instace of esxi installation not detected during vSphere 6.5 upgrade

Hi There,

 

I am trying to upgrade standalone ESXi host from ESXi, 5.5.0, 6480267 to ESXi 6.5 Patch 02 on HP DL380p Gen8 hardware using HPE custom image.

I am using interactive upgrade method. However, during upgrade when I select the datastore (SD Card) on which current ESXi, 5.5.0, 648026 installed, i am not getting upgrade option, it is not detecting previous esxi instace, rather getting 'Install' options which will wipe out the existing configs etc completely. The host is still running fine and no issues with 5.5.

 

Am I missing something? I following following KB article, but no luck.

Backup and restore of ESXi host Configuration

Hi There,

 

I am on the process of upgrading ESXi hosts running on 5.5 to 6.5. On one host I am not getting the option to upgrade, for some reason it is not detecting the esxi instance.

Is it possible to backup the configuration of ESXi host while it is running on 5.5 and restore it once it is clean installed with 6.5?

vSphere client install error J# 4113

I have installed vSphere on a server and visited it by IP address in my browser. It gave me a link to download the vSphere client. However, when I try to install this client I get the following error:

 

-

VMware vSphere Client 4.0

-

The Microsoft Visual J# 2.0 Second Edition installer returned error code '4113'.

-

OK

-

 

 

If I extract the installer with WinRar, it says:

-

VMware vSphere Client 4.0

-

Error 25070.Setup has detected that the Microsoft

Visual J# 2.0 Second Edition pre-requisite is not

installed on this system. Please install this pre-requisite

and try again.

-

OK  

-

 

 

 

 

I am running Windows Vista x64, which comes with .net 2.0 and 3 and I also have Visual Studio 2005 installed on the machine so I don't know why it is trying to install this in the first place, let alone why it is failing.

vsphere 6.5 identity source AD as LDAP - broken

Hello all,

 

We did a in-place upgrade from version 6.0 to version 6.5 and recently wanted to take advantage of the Active Directory 2012R2 feature of the "Protected Users" group.  After adding our privileged accounts into this group we realized we could no longer login to vcenter.  We were receiving an error message basically saying the password was incorrect.

 

I stumbled upon this VMware KB Article: VMware Knowledge Base  which I think explains the issue we are having.

 

We are trying to implement option 3 listed in that KB.... However, just trying to make any change that Identity Source results in me receiving the error message noted in the KB: "A vCenter Single Sign-On service error occurred".

 

It doesn't seem to matter what I do.. we receive that message.  Even trying to edit the current Identity Source and change it to LDAP only with no SSL -- I still receive that message.

 

Has anyone run into this issue?

ESXi stuck loading nimble_psp_direct

Hi

 

Started an upgrade from 5.5 to 6.5 using the update manager. As part of that process we have attached a a nimble baseline with the new nimble iSCSi connector.

 

Unfortunately the screen is now stuck showing 'Loading module nimble_psps_direct...'

 

My question is this, is there anyway to stop this loading or remove it, or are we on a road to booting from cd...??

Attempting to upgrade from VCSA 6.5.0.14000 to 6.5 U2b fails

I am trying to update the VCSA from 6.5 to 6.5 U2b.

 

To begin, I took a snapshot of the current VCSA.

I uploaded the patch ISO (VMware-vCenter-Server-Appliance-6.5.0.21000-8815520-patch-FP) to the local ESXi Datastore and attached it to the VCSA CD.

I logged into the vCenter Appliance and attempted the update and it failed.

I reverted back the snapshot and tried again using the method of logging into the appliance and using the software-packages utility.

 

It looks good until the end and I see the following:

 

ISO unmounted successfully

Running test transaction

Running pre-install script

Al VMware services stopped

Upgrading software packages

Package update failed

Starting all services

Installation failed

 

I rebooted the VCSA but cannot login, get a 503 service unavailable

 

I reverted back to the snapshot and can login to the 6.5.41000 version of VCSA

 

Any ideas as to what I should try next for an attempted upgrade?

Upgrading VCSA 6.5 with AD authentication to VCSA 6.7

Hi all,

 

I have a VCSA 6.5 VM in which I have set up AD authentication from an external AD server.

 

The upgrade instructions are pretty clear but I want to find out if my AD authentication would still work after the new VCSA 6.7 is deployed?

 

Anyone had experience in this?
