Consolidating multiple clusters, on various ESXi versions, with various storage, over various protocols!?

$

0

We have 4 vSphere clusters, each with their own storage.

1) 4 Host 6.0 cluster, with 11TB of all-flash Tintri storage over NFS via 10GB SFP+ Copper.

2) 3 Host 4.1 cluster, with 27TB of storage over 2 Equallogic crates via 1GB copper and 10GB SFP+ Copper respectively.

3) 4 Host 4.1 cluster, with 8TB of storage over 2 Infortrend crates via fiber channel.

4) 4 Host 4.1 cluster, with 14TB of storage over 2 HP P2000s via fiber channel.

The plan is to add a 5th Host to cluster 1, along with 50TB of storage, probably on 10GB SFP+ Copper via NFS and migrate the VMs from the other 3 clusters onto those hosts and storage.

As for migrating the VMs, I think this is our easiest option, but hoping to get some opinion/suggestions:

- Ensure all VM Port Groups from clusters 2,3 and 4 are trunked and replicated on cluster 1's hosts.

- Open firewall rules to allow Cluster 1's hosts to see and mount Cluster 2's storage.

          - power off all VMs on cluster 2. Remove them from Cluster 2's inventory.

          - add them to Cluster 1's inventory.

          - Storage vMotion them to new Datastores provisioned on the 50TB additional storage

- All a fiber channel card to the new Host 5 in cluster 1.

          - zone that card into the storage fabric of cluster 3 and present the disks, so it can see the Infortrend storage

          - power off all VMs on cluster 4, remove them from Cluster 2's inventory

          - add them to Cluster 1's inventory

          - Storage vMotion them to the new Datastores

Repeat for cluster 4.

We can afford the down time, but is this the easiest way?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I am trying a scripted upgrade from esxi 6.0 to esxi 6.5 on a remote disk (FC LUN) using iPXE server.

Seeing this issue “upgrade –firstdisk specified, but no suitable disk was found”.

However fresh“install” of esxi 6.5 works fine in the same environment with out any issues.  Please let me know if I am missing something in the upgrade part.

Unattended Kickstart Install

Everything works fine with the exception of if I am not at the machine when the box comes up telling to remove CD media, the machine reboots right back to the beginning of a new install.

Is there some entry in the ks.cfg to restart on the local disk after the install or -- is this not a totally unattended install.

Thanks

Vsphere upgrade from 5.5 to 6.5

Hello friends,

I have a question.

Our current ESXI version is 5.5 U2 and planning to upgrade to 6.5 U1.

Total no of host is 32 no's with single license key (I don't want to split the license keys);

Each host is dual cpu hosts.so total 64 capacity licenses with single key.

Now which is the best method:

1. To upgrade license keys to version 6.0 in myvmware portal and then upgrade the esxi hosts? or

2. Upgrade esxi hosts to 6.5 and then upgrade license keys in my VMware portal?

Please note all 32 hosts upgrade will be done in phase wise and will take 1 to 2 weeks time for the completion of upgrade.

So if I'm following the point :2, then will my hosts be in evaluation mode for 60 days or until I assign a new license? or will go disconnected? or any issues would happen? Issues to VMS in it?

Appreciate your help on it

Rgs,

uday

First steps in upgrade from 5.5 to 6.5

Hi all,

Current plan to upgrade is:

ADDED---- I need to upgrade my current vcenter server first to 6.5 yeah?

New ESXi host to add to my current 4 in production.

Build this as 6.5 host

Create a vm on this host to act as my embedded PSC appliance with vCenter server also installed on this VM

Migrate VM's from host 1 to the new 6.5 esxi host.

Upgrade host 1 to 6.5

Migrate the vms back onto the newly upgraded host.

Do this for each old 5.5 host.

I have a DR site which is also 5.5 and will be migrated to 6.5 but I think I can do this after the production upgrade.

Is there anything you would change here?

Thanks for any replies!

vSphere with a single ESXi host

I do understand that the question can sound crazy, but consider please a pure testing and selftraining environment with limited HW resources.

I don't think in any way to implement the same configuration in a production environment.

Can I create a vSphere infrastructure with a single ESXi host and a vCenter?

If I can get an additional box, can I install an additional ESXi server and create a vSphere infrastructure with 2 ESXi servers without a shared disk?

what happens to the license when upgrading from ESX 4.0 to 5.5?

So we have ESX server 4.0.0.171294 standard licnesed for 2 physical CPU. I understand with version 4.0, the highest i can go is version 5.5 U3.

1) How do i upgrade to 5.5? Do i just download the 5.5 trial version ISO and boot it up for the upgrade?

2) What happens to the license after the upgrade? Do i need new licenses?

thanks.

VCSA 6.5: IPv6 settings lost after reboot. Know bug?

Hello,

I can configure a VCSA 6.5 with dual IPv4+IPV6 stack.

When I  reboot the appliance, the IPV6 settings are lost.

I still can see the adresses in /etc/systemd/network/10-eth0.network

but a 'systemctl restart systemd-networkd.service' does not change anything

Known bug?

VCSA 6.5, vsphere client and Active Directory

I am planning to replace a vCenter 5.5 based on a Windows machine with a VCSA 6.5 VM.

Let me ask for two clarification:

  • Can the VCSA 6.5 VM be member of an Active Directory domain? I would say "Yes", but I would like to get a confirmation from experts...
  • Can users access the VCSA based vCenter with the "good old" vSphere client, at least for basic tasks?

Errors and Delay logging into VCSA 6.5

$

I have installed ESXi 6.5 U1 and VCSA U1e.
I installed the Enhanced Authentication Plugin.
I then joined the VCSA to AD.

When I use AD credentials to login to VCSA, it takes 50-70 seconds to login.
Using the administrator@vsphere.local seems to work without any issues and logs in in a matter of seconds.

After getting logged in with AD credentials, I then get  Errors / Alarms displayed on the screen, but do not appear in the vCenter Alarms display.

The query execution timed out because of a back-end data adapter 'com.vmware.license.client.cis.adapter.LicensingGlobalDataProviderAdapterImpl'

which took more than 120 seconds.

The query execution timed out because of a back-end property provider 'com.vmware.vum.dataservice.impl.RemediationPropertyProviderAdapterImpl'
which took more than 120 seconds.

I also see the below message

Some elements could not be shown or their information could not be retrieved in time.

I logged into the VCSA and did an NSLOOKUP on both on IP and DNS Name and the correct responses are returned as far as IP and Name.

Any ideas on what is causing the login delay and if they are tied to the errors?

thanks

vcsa migration fails

Hello all,

Current version 6.0u2,  two sites, onc vcenter and one psc at each site in ELM, one SSO site.  All systems are Windows at the moment.  I am using this image to preform the migration.

VMware-VCSA-all-6.5.0-7515524

VC1 - PSC1 - Datacenter1

VC2 - PSC2 - Datacenter2

When I go to preform to conversion of the first psc at my smaller site  it builds the new psc then says it is going to transfer 1.7GB of data, once it gets to 50% it dies with the error message.

A problem occurred while - Exporting VMware vCenter Authentication Framework data

when going through the logs it looks like it ran out of disk space?, when i go into the appliance and do df -h it shows the  /storage/db as full with 0% free.

Is this expected?  How can 1.7GB of data fill up 10GB?  Is it compressed then trying to extract it?  How can i find out how big that drive really needs to be, i could just extend it before i start the phase 2 of the psc conversion, or should i not do that?

Thanks,

Ludi

VCSA 6.5 Web GUI Error

I have successfully upgraded my VCSA 6 to 6.5 - after the upgrade I was able to login and use the vsphere web client without issue.

I then upgraded my single ESXi 6 host to 6.5, which was successful.  After booting up the VCSA, after logging into the Vsphere client I get the following error:-

Could not connect to one or more vCenter Server systems:

https://FQDN:443/sdk

At this point the client is unusable.  I have tried stopping and restarting all services via SSH, and rebooting the VCSA, however nothing has helped.

I have also tried following the instructions here “Failed to verify the SSL certificate for one or more vCenter Server Systems” error in the vSphere Web Client (2050273) … - However I only see 1 Service ID, so there doesn't appear to be a duplicate entry..

Many thanks

can you migrate vitual machines from 5.1 host to 6.5 host

$

Our current VMware environment includes 4, ESXi 5.1 host servers running 58 virtual machines.

For whatever reason, the previous VMware Admin, did not upgrade VMware and we are now getting ready to do a complete hardware refresh with new physical host and SAN environment.

Since there is no upgrade path from 5.1 to 6.5a, we are going to do a complete new installation of VMware and vCenter.

My question is, will it be possible to migrate our virtual machines from the 5.1 to the new environment or do we have to upgrade the current environment to 5.5 or 6.0 first?

update manger 6.5

Hi All ,

can someone comment on the following .

1:with vcenter 6.5 appliance update manger is integrated  so  there is no requirement of separte update manger machine.

traditionally  when we patch esxi host we put it into maintence mode first and then remediate.

is there any improvement in functionoingof update manger in 6.5 wherein it can  automatically put the hosts in manintence mode  .

i think the best practice still to individullay put host into maintence mode and then remediate .

Please suggest your thoughts on above points.

Existing ESXI version - 5.5 AND 6.0 upgrade to 6.5

Hi friends,

We have following 2 Vsphere environment,

Existing ESXI version - 5.5 AND 6.0
vCenter version          - vCenter Server 5.5 GA (build 1312298)

                                   - vCenter Server 6.0 Update 1 (build 3018524)

Here are the following licenses,

VMware vSphere 5 Standard Essential plus (unlimited cores per CPU) 4CPU
vCenter Server 5 Essentials -  1 instance

VMware vSphere 6 Standard (unlimited cores per CPU) 4CPU
vCenter Server 6 Standard - 1 instance

Can I update this environment to Vsphere 6.5 with no cost within the support periods?

The existing licenses are for 2 for 6.0 but didn't upgrade the 1 vsphere which is still 5.5 (expired 10-29-2016). Can we upgrade to the 5.5 and 6.0 to

vsphere 6.5 with no cost since we have vmware support until 2-20-2019

Thanks,

Jocelyn

vCenter 6.5 > vCenter 6.7

Hi Admins,

I have a test environment which containing approx 800 VMs.

We have had a lot of issues with our current vCenter (database corruption etc.)

Now we would like to "upgrade" our vCenter to 6.7 ,  but I don't want to migrate old "errors", I would like to do a clean new install and then just connect my VMhosts to my new 6.7 vcsa.

I don't care about old performance graphs etc, all I care about is that my VMs should/must be up and running all of the time.

My plan is :

shutdown my old vcsa

start my new vcsa (same name as the old one)

reconnect my VMhosts.

When I've done above all should be fine and my VMs should be happy as usual.

But all my VMs are connected to a distributed switch. When they are migrated to my new vCenter I guess the portgroups on each VM will say something like "invalid-backing"

I don't want to change the PG on 800 VMs manually...

Would it work if I took a backup of my old DVswitch and just did restore on my new vcsa?

Would the portgroups on my VMs then be vaild?

Regards

Johan
