Moving vCenter to new Datacentre

Hi all,

At the moment i have a v5.0 vCenter in the old datacentre and want to move to a v5.1 vCenter in the new datacentre.

Can you please provide me with assistance on the best way to do this?

Questions:

Do i recycle the vCenter Server DB and the vCenter Inventory Service DB?

If the plan is to build the new vCenter and then slowly migrate hosts over, will this mean i have to build new DB's?

I've never moved a vCenter before so any help is greatly appreciated.

Thankyou.

vSphere Web Client 5.1 error when using Linked Mode

We have two vCenter 5.1 servers running in Linked Mode (Server 2008 R2 with remote SQL 2005). When I log in to the WebClient, I get the error "Unable to connect to vCenter Inventory Service on <servername>, and I'm only able to see the Inventory of one of the vCenter Servers.

Capture.JPG

When I take the servers out of Linked Mode, they both now show up in the Web Client, due to the new SSO service. But, of course, now they don't both show up in the VI Client, as is the advantage of Linked Mode. I'm not getting any of the typical Inventory Service issues in the VI Client (Hardware Status tab errors, etc.), only the one issue with the WC. I did find a KB article that showed some promise. http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2019346 But, alas, no joy. I've spent about 5 hours with Support working on this, and they seem to be just as stumped.

Has anyone come across this and conquered it?

Thanks a lot,

David

vSphere console/display window size error

I have a unique problem I've been troubleshooting for a month with no resolution. I'm hoping someone may have run across this same issue and found a resolution as it is a tough one to even Google. I'm running vSphere 5.1 (previously 5 and 4.1) on a Windows 7 x64 machine and each install has given me the same (display, console) screen. I have attached the image of what I am seeing. Within the small square allotted, you can see 'Getting Started' is where it should be and the left and right arrows take you through the tabs but there is no way to increase the screen size to see what you're doing. I can 'Open Console' from the inventory list and edit settings with no issue, so I'm not completely stuck. It's just the main display that has this issue. Changed screen res from 1920 x 1080 to every other size available but no dice. I've uninstalled/reinstalled the client, removed all registry entries and program files directories and still end up with this tiny box in the display after reinstalling. My next step would be to reinstall windows which would be a pain in the neck but will hopefully solve the problem. Wondering if anyone else here has encountered this and could throw some insight my way.

Thanks!

Upgrade vCenter 4.1 to vCenter 5.1

Hi everyone....

I have 5 ESX 4.1 server with vCEnter 4.1 and i want to migrate to ESXi 5.1. I have approximatively 100 virtual machines.

For the Esx 4.1 server, i will probably reinstall from scratch one by one.

The question i have it's for vCenter. I need to change the physical machine where my current vCenter is installed. In this case i will intall Windows 2008 R2 64bit on brand new server and install vCenter 5.1

Does i have to backup something from the old vCenter 4.1 server? If yes, what ( maybe DB )?

I will add 2 more ESXi 5.1 servers to go to 7 and like a said before, i have approximatively 100 virtual machines. With this configuration, i can't install SQL Express, i need the complete version of SQL.

Someone have some tips to configure the new vCenter 5.1 on a SQL 2008 R2 64bit ( not express )?

SSO Error 29148.STS

tl;dr: doing SSO basic install, bundled SQL 2K8 Express DB, getting 29148.STS error in the end ... what gives?

I'm trying to do an install of Single Sign On, Inventory Service and vCenter Server Upgrade. I'm doing basic install and using local OS account(s) only (no Active Directory). I failed on the 1st one: SSO. It ended with this error:

vCenter Single Sign On:

Error 29148.STS configuration error.

I accepted just about all defaults except for the screen:

Security Support Provider Interface Service Information

Which by default had the box checked: "Use network service account"

I unchecked this and input

User name: localmachine-hostname\localaccount (of course, I used the real local hostname and another account that has admin rights).

Password: (a password with no special characters, alphanumeric and one upper case).

Domain: localmachine-hostname

I failed to get it right the 1st couple of times, but finally it accepted and allowed me to continue on. I do not know if this is what caused the 29148.STS error or not. (Should I just leave this checked? Although this Windows box is in our AD, I do all VMware local OS user(s) only).

I _think_ the issue might be with SQL. I found this: VMware Single Sign On Error 29148.STS but can see nothing there I didn't do. This guy: http://arritdor.e-wilkin.com/2013/01/vsphere-51-upgrade-home-lab.html got the same error, started over and accepted more defaults and it worked. Searching while editing this, and found this: Howto: SSO – Simple AD Authentication with VMware 5.1 | Virten.net <-- this seems to indicate that, yea, I need to accept the default/check box for "Security Support Provider Interface Service Information"....

It appears I need to look at what I'm doing at the SQL part. I'm using the bundled SQL 2008 Express DB (currently have the bundled 2005 Express DB).

Can someone give other insight?

Hello all,

I am currently trying to install ESXI 5.1.0 U1 onto our Dell PowerEdge R620 diskless configuration.

I have a Dell EqualLogic PS6100x SAN and we are doing iSCSI boot.

The bios version is 1.6.0 in the R620 and the SAN controller firmware version is 6.0.4.

The error is as follows:

Operation Failed.

This program has encountered an error:

(Use the arrow keys to scroll)

Error (see log for more info):

Expecting 2 bootbanks, found 0.

This is happening with both 5.1.0-799733 and 5.1.0.update01-1065491

I have put a ticket in with Dell to make sure it isnt a firmware issue or a me being dumb issue.

Any suggestions at this point would be great.

Thanks,

Keith

Upgrade to 5.1 Web Client loose vCenter Server

Hi, I have to upgrade vCenter from 5.0 to 5.1. Before upgrade the production enroment we decide to make a test.

here the scenario:

vCenter 5.0.0 455964 with Update Manager and Web Client installed

2 ESXi 5.0.0 623860

2 Ubuntu Test VM

We have some vcenter server local user that login to vcenter i.e for update maneger, VMA, etc.

we have a principal AD called "MASTER.ENT.LOCAL" where there are the users and group to manage vsphere

we have a second AD called "VSPHERE.ENT.LOCAL", trusted with the MASTER.ENT.LOCAL where every vSphere Servers are joined (vCenter, vcloud director, esxi server, etc...)

Upgrade Procedure

 1. Installing SS0 server primary node ( TMP-SSO.VSPHERE.ENT.LOCAL)
 2. Backup of vCenter and VUM DB
 3. snapshot of vCenter VM (Step 2-3 are for Rollback procedure)
 4. upgrade vcenter inventory service on VCENTER.VSPHERE.ENT.LOCAL
 5. Upgrade vCenter Server.
 6. Upgrade of Web client

We do not receive any errors during every step

after the upgrade we cannot login whith MASTER.ENT.LOCAL users, but we can login on Web client with admin@system-domain user.

on the Web client, Administration --> Sign-on Discovery --> configuration we only sse one AD (VSPHERE.ENT.LOCAL) and we added also MASTER.ENT.LOCAL.

if we go on the Role Manager the field vCenter Server is BLANK!!!!

on the Web client admin-app page we have the vcneter signed like registered and we cannot unregistered because any login (admin@sysetm-domain or AD users) cannot login into.

it seems that web server loos vcenter

i tried to register manualy on the sso and on the IS, (http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2033620)

any suggest?

Upgrading from ESXi 5.1 to ESXi 5.1U1 skips all VIBs

Hi

I downloaded the update1 ZIP from here. https://download2.vmware.com/patch/software/VUM/OFFLINE/release-383-20130425-023671/update-from-esxi5.1-5.1_update01.zip…

From an SSH session I then used the command:

esxcli software vib update --depot=/vmfs/volumes/4ffc928f-b4cb5877-41f5-f46d04e56de9/Patches/update-from-esxi5.1-5.1_update01.zip

I then get the summary which says nothing was installed, nothing was removed and all VIBs were skipped:

Update Result

Message: Dryrun only, host not changed. The following installers will be applied: []

Reboot Required: false

VIBs Installed:

VIBs Removed:

VIBs Skipped: VMware_bootbank_ata-pata-amd_0.3.10-3vmw.510.0.0.799733, VMware_bootbank....

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Database user name and password (vpxuser?)

$

Hi all, i'm in the process of planning an upgrade of vCentre server from 4.1x to 5.1x. vCentre is running on MSSQL 2005 32bit on Windows 2008 server R2. Once i've updated MSSQL 2005 to the latest SP I plan to do a simple install as everything's on the same box.

My issue is that I've inherited this system and unfortunately there is no documentation on what the database user name and password is related to vCenter.

In the MSSQL management studio I can see a database user called "vpxuser" which seems to have "db_owner" permissions for both MSDB and VCDB. I assume this is the user i need to give when prompted during the vCentre upgrade?

The problem is i do not have a password for this "vpxuser" account, so my question is, am i safe to reset this user's password right before i upgrade? and then use these new credentials when prompted?

Thanks in advance,

Matt

Does Vcenter VUM downgrade new drivers on Host update?

$

Hello, I know when deploying Update 1 or Update 2, etc via the command line with VIB installs, you can control whether Update 1 will downgrade or keep newer drivers, such as Nic,HBA, etc.

I am wondering what is the default behavior when upgrading from say 5.1 to U1 through VUM? If i have a new driver from a vendor than is in U1--would it be kept--or downgraded to what is in U1? Thanks!

vCenter 5.1 rejecting ESXi 4.1 hosts

$

Hi all,

With the help of a few blog posts, I've upgraded our vCenter Server installation from 4.1 to 5.1. Nothing too fancy, everything all on a single VM, managing less than 100 VMs across three hosts.

Everything went well until the time came to update the agents on each host. During the vCenter installation I chose to update them manually. With each attempt to reconnect a host to vCenter, the Tasks pane would show it installing the agent, begin retrieving data from the host, and then promptly fail at the step "Retrieving data from vCenter agent" with the error message "Cannot contact the specified host (host.domain.com). The host may not be available on the network, a network configuration problem may exist, or the management services on this host may not be responding." Of the four hosts I tried to connect, one is running 4.1.0u1 348481 and three are running ESXi 4.1.0u3 800380, one of which has no VMs and is a completely fresh install of ESXi 4.1.0u3, with no previous agent installed. If ESXi 5.1 is installed on that host instead, it's added to vCenter without issue.

Here's what I've looked at so far:

 • used netcat to verify that all hosts can be contacted on port 902
 • used netstat on vCenter to show it's listening on UDP 902
 • disabled the firewall on vCenter
 • turning off all but one network port on each host
 • restarting / reinstalling the agents on each host
 • setting the vCenter Managed IP address and Server Name
 • nothing I've found in the logs on the host or vCenter to give any clues to what's failing

Has anyone run into this kind of issue?

VM MSCS guest cluster and esxi upgrade

$

Hi

I am upgrading to ESXi 5.0 from ESX 4. It is 4 node esx cluster. And, there are some MSCS guest VM cluster running on these esx hosts with RDMs attached.

I just need to confirm the steps as given below (specificaly for dealing the MSCS clustered Virtual Machines)

1)Move all the VMs off the ESX host; standalone VM can be vMotion migrated and for MSCS clustered VMs shutdown the passve node running on this particular ESX host and migrate it to another host.

2) Take out this ESX hosts ; rebuild it with ESXi 5.0 and add back in the same esx cluster and configure it on the vCenter and dvswitch; and ensure it is able to see all the storage devices including the RDMs(for MSCS clustered VMs)

3) Now migrate the MSCS clustered VM passive node back to the ESXi 5 host we just rebuilt.( and then upgrade VM tools and hardware etc

4) Then upgrade the second ESX hosts in a similar way as mention in step 2.

5)Then migrate the active node of the MSCS clustred VM to this second ESXi 5.0 host. (upgrade the VM tools and hardware.)

And then upgrade all the ESX hosts one by one in a similar fashion. Please advice if this approach is god to go

Many thanks in advance

Cheers

I have created the storage pool and the LUN for the EXSI hosts to boot from. I am now at the part ready to load EXSI onto the SAN to boot from it.

I havent been able to find any good documentation and was curious if anyone could provide any helpful knowledge.

vSphere ESXi 5.1 (free) Installation Error

I'm attempting to install vSphere ESXi 5.1 (free version) from a USB thumb drive as this computer doesn't have a CD/DVD drive. I've created a bootable USB drive, copied the ISO to it and configured my BIOS to boot from USB. Unfortunately, I get the following error:

3>Command line is empty.

<3>Fatal error: 32 (Syntax)

I've even tried using tools to create the USB thinking maybe I did something wrong such as:

http://www.linuxliveusb.com/

I did find the following article:

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2007475

But the only option my BIOS has related to UEFI is under "Boot mode select" and the only options it offers are below and neither of them seem to make a difference.

 • UEFI
 • Legacy + UEFI

Any ideas on how to get this working?

VMware vSphere Essentials Kit for 3 hosts (with or without subscription?)

Hello,

I want to buy "VMware vSphere Essentials Kit for 3 hosts"

it is sufficient that I purchase the license or I need to buy the subscription of 1 year, 3 years or more packages for support?

What is the subscription?

If I find a package with even the subscription of 1/3 years ... expiry of that period what happens? The license no longer works?

If it is necessary, having at the moment 2 hosts .. how many subscriptions do I need?

Also, I find only "VMware vSphere 5 Essentials Kit for 3 hosts" with no indication of version 5.1.

It 's the same thing or should I look for "VMware vSphere 5.1 Essentials Kit for 3 hosts"?

thanks

Check my management network configuration please?

I'm trying to work out the settings outlined in this yellow-bricks article, but i'm not sure i've got it right;

http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2011/03/22/esxi-management-network-resiliency/

I have two vmnics added to vswitch0, vmnic0 and vmnic10.

2013-06-27_11-02-34.jpg

On that vswitch I have two port groups, one for vmotion vmk1 and the other for management vmk0.

On the NIC teaming tab of the vmotion port group I specify vmnic10 as the active adapter and vmnic0 as the standby with failback set to no.

2013-06-27_10-56-42.jpg

On the NIC teaming tab of the management network port group I do the opposite, vmnic10 is standby and vmnic0 is active, but with failback set to no again.

2013-06-27_10-57-06.jpg

Is this correct so far?

What I'm ultimately confused by is the vswitch configuration NIC teaming tab. Should both adapters be set to active since they are each active for a different port group in that vswitch? and should failback be set to no in that tab as well?

2013-06-27_10-56-14.jpg

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Installing esxi 5.1 on a virtual machine on esxi 5.1, getting "VMWare requires the Execute Disable/No Execute CPU feature to be enabled"

Hi,

I am trying to install a ESXi server on a virtual machine in a vSphere 5.1 environment, but keep getting the purple screen with "VMWare requires the Execute Disable/No Execute CPU feature to be enabled" notification.

I have set guest OS to ESXi 5.x and CPU/MMU virtualization to Intel VT-x/AMD-v (tried both for MMU and EPT/RVI options).

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Unable to connect to vSphere via vSphere Client

I just finished installed/configured VMware Hypervisor 5.1.0 on HP Proliant DL380 G7 server. Below is the error I got when connecting to the host via vSphere Client:

vSphereLogin-error.JPG

In the hypervisor Network Adapters, the static IP address that I have is linked to vmnic0 showing below.

vmware-NIC-mac.jpg

Please let me know if this is incorrect.

And in the DNS Configuration, I set the Primary and Alternate DNS Server to match ours. Then the Hostname is changed to CompanyHost.

Again, please let me know if my configuration is incorrect. If it's all correct, I wonder why connecting to this host is not working. Any suggestion is much appreciated.

Can't get vsphere eval license key

$

Folks,

I successfully registered for an evaluation of vSphere with Operations Management and got my "VMware vCenter Operations Management Suite 5.7" license key. When I try to apply this key to my vCenter server I get the error "License error: 5" "Diagnostic message: License file not found" (see image). I get this same error when trying to apply this key to my ESXi 5.1 host server.

(Moderator Note: a.p. removed screen shot with license key!)

I KNOW this license key is not for vsphere but rather for Operations Manager but how do I get an evaluation license key for vSphere? Is there any way to apply the license key I received to vCenter or must I install the vCenter Operations Management appliance and apply this license key to that server? The procedure to apply my evaluation license key is NOT MADE CLEAR in any documentation I have found so far on evaluating vSphere.

Could someone PLEASE provide a definitive statement on how to use my provided evaluation license key (see image) and how to obtain and properly apply an evaluation license to my vCenter server?

vmware_vsphere_eval_license_2013-06-28.png

I would be very appreciative for any assistance.

Thanks.

Windows 2008 R2 Managed Service accounts and VSphere question

Hello all

Have been lurking around here for awhile, as I do my research for a vCenter build. I have a question and would like some of the veterans input on the subject.

I will be running my vSphere environment, and was wondering if I could use Managed Service Accounts in the Active Directory to run some of the vCenter network services ? Has anyone tried this with any luck?... I did attempt to google the subject but came up with no answers. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

thanks
