Upgrading 6.5 VCHA with external Platform Services Controllers

$

Hey Community,

I wanted to confirm the upgrade steps for vCenter 6.5 with external platform services controller and VCHA.

In my configuration I have two platform services controller that sit behind a load balancer, and vCenter is configured with VCHA utilizing the load balancer's VIP for connectivity to the platform services controller.

In order to do the upgrade I figure the steps would be as follows

PSC:

  1. Snapshot both Platform Services Controllers
  2. Login to PSC 01 on the management interface, conduct the upgrade through the webgui and reboot
  3. Login to PSC 02 on the management interface after PSC 01 is back online, upgrade through the webgui and reboot

vCenter

  1. Snapshot all 3 vCenter virtual machines (witness, peer, primary)
  2. Put VCHA cluster into maintenance mode
  3. Patch the witness node (attach ISO to VM and execute 'software-packages install'. Reboot after patch
  4. Patch the secondary (peer) node and reboot.
  5. Fail over cluster to secondary node after its back online
  6. Patch the primary node and reboot
  7. Fail cluster back to primary node (optional)

I didn't find a KB or blog article specifically outlining the upgrade steps for this configuration.

Thanks for validating.

vCSA 6.5 upgrade parallel build

Hi There,

We are running on vSpehre 5.5 with 30 ESXi hosts and one Windows vCenter server, and planning to upgrade the infrastructure to vSphere 6.5 U1.

We would like to follow green field approach for upgrading the platform. That means instead upgrading the existing vCenter server, deploy the new vCenter server appliance (without native HA), install, configure then migrate the ESXi hosts to new vCenter server, finally decommission the Windows vCenter server.

Though googled,I could not get right information for this approach I need to follow. When I install new VCSA 6.5, do I need to deploy that linked mode to be able to migrate the ESXi hosts and VMs? What is the best practice for this approach? Could you help me with high level steps ?

Thanks in advance

Opening Vcenter 6.0 with Virgo Server shows VCenter Servers/DataCenters/Host as empty?

Hi All,

I recently configured VCenter 6.0 server. Then to connect with that vcenter 6.0, i configured my development machine as it told in SDK docs.

After starting "Virgo Server", i opened my vcenter 6.0 server in my browser as follows,

It login successfully but it shows VCenter Servers,DataCenters and Host as empty.

I dont know whether i am missing any other configuration. Can somebody help me pls?

Note:

I added my vcenter 6.0 domain name in "hosts" file which is in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc.

VCSA 6u2 check for updates fails using internet proxy

I am having this problem that if I use Check Updates -> Check URL I get the error "Download Failed." in the VMware Appliance Management Interface (VAMI)

Internet Proxy is configured in VAMI.

This problem applies to both of these versions.

VMware vCenter Server Appliance

6.0.0.20000 Build Number 3634791

VMware vCenter Server Appliance

6.0.0.10200 Build Number 3343022

I am checking

/var/log/vmware/applmgmt/software-packages.log

and find

Resolving vapp-updates.vmware.com... failed: Name or service not known.

wget: unable to resolve host address `vapp-updates.vmware.com'

Yes DNS server does not resolve internet IPs but that is no problem for vRO appliance or older vSphere Update Manager or any internet browser.

Actually nothing reaches the internet proxy (logging on firewall) it appears the VCSA does not even try to contact the internet proxy.

Anybody an idea what's wrong? I think DNS shouldn't have to forward to internet DNS, I mean VRO and older vSphere Update Manager can do without it as well.

Download of vSphere Hypervisor 6.5 (ESXi ISO) image and license keys

$

Hello

I am contacting you because I need to clarify a point regarding the download of the VMware vSphere Hypervisor 6.5 (ESXi ISO) image (Includes VMware Tools).

I am looking for the free version (free trial for 60 days) and I do not know if I have to download the "6.5.0 0a" or the "6.5.0 U1" version.

I mean I am currently using a "ESXi 6.0 U2" ISO image on my serveur and now I would like to uninstall this version in order to install the 6.5 one.

My questions are:

1. Can I download the "6.5.0 U1" for free ? If yes, where can I get the License key ? (a License Key is provided at the "6.5.0 0a" download page and not provided at "6.5.0 U1" download page). If it possible can someone give me the link to download the "6.5.0 U1" with the License Key mentionned ?

2. I read that the 6.5.0 version will not completely expire in 60 days but there are new limitations to the usage of it (as long as we do not have a requirement of VM's greater the 8vCPU (Socket or Core) then it will work as previously). Is that correct ? and will I have to enter another key after the 60 days (both for the 6.5.0 0a and 6.5.0 U1 versions) ?

In advance, I thank you very much for your help.

Damien

Moving vm's from ESXi 4.0 to ESXi 6

$

We have four esx v4.0 hosts and a vcenter server on 2003.  Been running 7 years so it's time to retire.

The vm's are already on a new Equalogic iSCSI array.

I know I can't vmotion between the different hardware platforms, and vcenter server 6.0 won't manage ESXi 4.0 anyway.

If I bring up four new 6.0 hosts and a new vcenter server, I'm thinking I can shut down a vm, remove it from the 4.0 inventory, and add it to the 6.0 cluster.  Then boot it up.

Would this work?

Darron...

The query execution timed out because of a back-end property provider 'com.vmware.vsphere.client.storage.impl.StoragePropertyProvider' which took more than 120 seconds.

Unable to present LUNs to vSphere, timeout on new datastore Name and device selection

This error is addressed inkb 2146229 but the workaround doesn’t apply for 6.5.0, in my case I’m on 6.5 U1 Build 5973321

https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2146229

The path to query-server-config.xml is no longer /usr/lib/vmware-invsvc/lib/server/config/

When I finally found query-server-config.xml the<property name="xdbMemPercentage" value="<I>XX" /> is no longer in there.

As this was a timeout issue, and in my case I was presenting 12 LUNs with x8 paths, I asked the storage team to just present 4 LUNs at a time and this worked.

However I just found that there appears to be an option to set this from vSphere Client.

Right click on the vCenter Server (top of the Navigator pane) > Configuration > General – Timeout Setting

vcsa-6-5-settings.JPG

I cannot test this in my current environment, if someone is able to fix this issue through increasing the timeout in the web client please reply and let the community know.

So everything was going fine, i am upgrading from vcenter 6.0 windows embedded to vcenter 6.5 appliance w/external psc.  I am at the point where I run the migration assistant on the vcenter and now I am failing the precheck.  I have extra tables or columns, but I dont' know the exact sql query to run.  I will post the whole file, but I will post what I think is the most relevant part of the vcdb_req.err log

Incremental update for v8.5.9 did not work properly

Yesterday I was invited by VMWare to carry out an incremental update for the version of VMWare that I have on my MacBook Air. The Virtual machine runs windows 10.

After completing the update, which had the graphics go 'fuzzy' during the upgrade, the Windows 1o that is installed does not run particularly quickly. Can you please tell me how to sort out the problem. Ultimately I could uninstall VMWare and reinstall via Time Machine but I am currently loath to do so.

Change IP for VM kernel mgmt of esxi host (trunk port)

$

Dear All,

I have Two esxi hosts in a cluster. Two NIC in each esxi host are configured as trunk so I have my vm kernel port and also VM network configured in same. One NIC in each host is set for vmotion. Now due to certain requirements I need to change the IP for vmkernel port of esxi. I need to understand changing will effect running VM or not. I am thinking like this:

- disable HA in cluster

- remove host from vcenter

-physically change esxi mgmt. IP, restart mgmt. IP

-add the esxi to new vcenter server, since we will be shutting down old vcenter and new vcenter is in new IP range the same as I want to change for esxi

are above given steps ok?
