Hi,
I am the network administrator at a school, and I need to update our Vsphere. We are running ESXi 6.0 and vCenter 6.0. This set up was originally made by a consultant that the school no longer has a working relationship with.
After doing some research, I believe the only practical option is an upgrade to 6.7. I would like to set up a test environment and practice the upgrade before attempting the actual upgrade. We have two Dell Poweredge hosts, and vCenter running on a physical Windows 2012 R2 server.
I downloaded ESXi 6.0 from the vmware download page and installed it successfully on a workstation. The upgrade of ESXi seems fairly straight forward – I will just burn the ISO to a DVD and upgrade from the console.
It is the upgrade of vCenter that is causing some confusion. The vCenter we have currently installed is a Windows application. It doesn’t need to use a web browser. The application is in this directory:
C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\Infrastructure\Virtual Infrastructure Client\Launcher
I have attached a screenshot of this application.
Here is the issue: when I download and install vCenter 6.0 from the vmware website, this directory and application is not present. Instead, it can only be accessed via a web browser. This is preventing me from practicing the upgrade and getting a good understanding of the upgrade process.
Can someone please explain why our current vCenter 6.0 is different from the one that is available for download on the vmware website? Also, I would greatly appreciate and advice or guidance on this upgrade.
Thanks, Chuck.
