Hi all,
i need to upgrade 3 host esx 4.1 to a 5.1 version, also need upgrade vcenter and datastore, please anyone can confirm the sequence ?
I have 3 host (ibm blade hs22) with esx4.1, a windows 2008 64bit vcenter 4.1 VIRTUAL MACHINE and an ibm ds3400 FC storage with 2 datastore (all vm can stay on lun2 for limited time).
I need also to upgrade datastore to vmfs 5 and move vcenter to vcsa (to free a windows license), so i think to do:
a) free host1 from any vm to host2 and host3, free lun1 from any vm to lun2.
b) install esxi 5 (new install? after install i can see lun1 and lun2 without issue to vm's running on lun2?).
c) format or upgrade lun1 to vmfs5
d) install new vcsa on host1, attach host1, host 2 (esx41) and host 3 (esx41) to vcsa. configure new vcsa.
e) move vm's from host 2 & 3 to host 1 (vmotion work?)
f) move vm's from lun2 to lun1 (powered off, i have essential plus not storage vmotion).
g) format (or upgrade ? is possible?) host2 & host3
h) attach host 2 and host 3 to vcsa (if not upgraded i think).
i) format or upgrade lun2 to vmfs5
Is this the correch path ? i know vcsa has some limitations but not a problem, i have no sso and few configuration on vcenter thus not a problem complete vcsa reconfiguration.
I read some documents but seem there is not upgrade path from vcenter 4.1 to vcsa.
Thanks all, please tell me something about, especially about issue to running vm's and the lun2 running datastore
